Darwin's "Golf Courses of Great Britain"

Anyone familiar with this book (1925)?  

How does it differ from "Golf Courses of The British Isles" (1910), other than the Irish courses having been dropped?  (I think he left them out, because he hadn't revisited Ireland and was worried he was out of touch.)

Which notable courses are included that aren't in the 1910 book?  Is it illustrated with photos?  I guess Harry Rountree's paintings aren't included?

Sorry to start this one off, off topic. But I have to compliment your taste in music, my friend. The album cover from The Clash is a nice touch! And timely as well, in light of the recent passing of Joe Strummer  ;)

Paul, I have one I'm staring at this very moment I type this.

As far as I can tell, the book is the same, just a different title, and a different cover then from the original. (This one doesn't have a jacket)

One thing I did happen to notice, slightly different then the original GCOBI, is Rountree's artwork looks to be a tad more vivid with contrast. It could be me, but my Classics of Golf copy doesn't even come close to being so vivid.

From a collectors book I have, (Thanks Yancey) the books were the same, just named different for this paticular later printing.

I don't think I'm much help, but I stumbled across this book at an out of town library and tried to quickly skim/speed read it. I do recall in the forward he said he excluded Ireland because he hadn't been over there in years and wasn't sure about changes.

I'm not real clear on what additions he included, I do recall he updated courses that had been altered, for example Muirfield, Hoylake and the other chanpionship venues. There was quite a bit of design activity between 1910 and 1925, you would think there would be lots of new material, but I had the impression it wasn't all that much different. Then again my memory may have failed me.

I was fed up with the golf pics not showing up properly and what with Srummer's death and the Hall of Fame induction, it's Clashmania again.  Simonon smashing his bass shows up just fine, I wonder if Pennie Smith was covered in pieces of it?

There must be some new courses included!? Any chance you could double check for the London area? There were so many ground breaking courses built between 1910 and 1925: Swinley, St Georges Hill, Sunn New, Wentworth East...

Paul, I stand corrected. The preface of the second edition states how the Chapter on courses in Ireland have disappeared, as well as new courses elsewhere, being added.

Usually too expensive, if original edition!  $400 on the web for first edition in good nick.

It's "'orses 'ead 'andle", I think, and yes, there is a sequel.  One of my pals from Yorkshire does a great rendition.

Vis a vis the book, my friend is knowledgeable about these things (cursed E-Bay!), so a bargain is not likely, but I'll see what he has.

Are you sure this wasn't the Classics of Golf "Golf Courses of the British Isles" - A direct copy of the 1910 edition (which didn't include Beau Desert)?... I think Sean is looking for the 1925 reprint of which the cheapest I have found is $500...

Darwin's 1925 edition has never been reprinted to the best of my knowledge. He leaves out the irish courses from this edition but there are quite a few added and updated.
