Looking for the Hogan home video
« on: January 05, 2009, 12:54:12 PM »
Hey Guys -- quite a while back, someone posted the link to a cool video of Ben Hogan. The group presumed that he was vacationing at Seminole and staying at George Coleman's house in P.B.

Hogan's basically hitting balls into the Ocean from Coleman's back yard, and it was pretty entertaining.

Does anyone remember this particular video? I have lost it on my home computer. I believe that it was part of a web site regarding the "golfing machine" program of instruction.

Thanks for any help, Rob

Rob,

I think I have it somewhere but the fount of all knowledge on this particular subject is Yancey Beamer, who produced a video of Ben Hogan in various iterations and locales. It was set to the music from "Chariots of Fire."

I have it, and can send it to you...PM me for your address.  It is enormous, though...44MB, so I'm not sure how email-able it is, but I'll give it a go to you.

Does anyone know how old Hogan was at that time ? The video shows he had still great speed through the ball .
Firm greens, firmer fairways.

Mike Maves posted some info about this video a couple months ago on his EXCELLENT blog. He introduces the video with these words:

In 1977, at age 65, Ben Hogan made one final trip to Florida to enjoy time with his good friend George Coleman and to play a little bit of golf at Seminole where for many years he had loved to practice in the winter months leading up to the Masters. George Coleman had a home on the water and, according to James Dodson’s biography Ben Hogan: An American Life, Coleman and Hogan often hit balls into the ocean from that backyard. At the time of what appears to be Hogans’ last trip to Seminole Coleman had just purchased a new video camera and wanted to test it out. This led to one of the most important pieces of film ever made of Ben Hogan – The Coleman Video. Magnum184 on the Golfwrx Thread pointed out to me that you can actually see the balls land if you pay attention.

BTW, it was Mike Maves who informed me that the Moe Norman quote mentioned here was actually by Paul Bertholy, a golf instructor and good friend of Moe Norman.

Jamie, Art - thanks very much. I've read Hogan's Five Fundamentals many times, but only when I saw him in this video actually swinging a club did it all come together and make sense for me. Lovely.

The "Slo-Mo" swing that Hogan does in this video and practiced on quite a bit is just great to watch.  Youtube has a bunch of great videos on Hogan and there is a lot to learn by watching him hit balls.

Jamie - what surprised me was how fluid his swing was, i.e. how seamlessly and even elegantly all the parts of the golf swing described in his book came together in action.  Also, it seems that he developed not only a near perfect golf swing, but more importantly one that was perfect for his body type. I can't imagine, for example, Jack Nicklaus ever having the same swing, and I guess it was the wisdom of Mr. Grout not to try to imprint the Hogan ideal onto his young student. Also, I saw in that video how and why Hogan's relatively wide stance (one that, try as I might, just doesn't seem to work for me) worked for him.

I wish I was a much better golfer...

Peter -- I think you have that in common with Mr. Hogan.

Isn't that why we admire him so much?
