Tom- Perhaps the ability of the newer American golfer, changed mindsets?

Can you imagine what it must've been like? The majority of golfers had to be hacks extraordinare. Not until the sport took hold, would the average ability have increased to the point of having a decent field of golfers.

 We still see some of that today, when begginers try to take on a championship lay-out, before doing their diligence.

That is true, there was a wave of condemnation against blindness. HG Hutchinson argued that the complete rejection of blind holes (and cross hazards) had gone too far. For the sake of variety and interest he thought they could and should be used (on a limited basis). And Macdonald, as we know, was influenced by Hutchinson.

It is interesting to note Wethered and Simpson's theory on 'bad' holes was written in 1929 and then again in 1952.
