Golf in Newfoundland
« on: February 25, 2004, 03:54:12 PM »
It is looking like I might have a trip coming up to Newfoundland.  Is there any good golf there?  Does anyone know when the season runs from?

Thanks!
And I took full blame then, and retain such now.  My utter ignorance in not trumpeting a course I have never seen remains inexcusable.

David,

Admiral's Green in St. John's, designed by Graham Cooke. I played here in our National Junior about 7 years ago (my memories are a little foggy), and it certainly proved itself a good test of golf. It may very well be the best you'll find in the province, along with Bally Haly G & CC. I can only attest for the Admiral, which had a number of strong holes, and is a decent golf course on the whole. The course sits atop a hill overlooking the city and the Atlantic Ocean in the distant, and is thus quite idyllic. I found the course to be a little too narrow, especially given the winds that often wreck havoc on Newfoundland. The terrain is rather pleasant for golf, although the downhill par-3 tenth is a little extreme in my opinion. Architecturally, the course featured only one abominable feature, a hidden water hazard situated above the 8th fairway, and running the length of the hole!! Overall, if in St. John's and in need of golf, I'de certainly recommend the course. It may not be anything to write home about, but it provides a sound design and a pleasing afternoon on the links.

David and Tyler: The best course, hands down, is Twin Rivers, about two hours from St. John's. It is a really good Doug Carrick/Robbie Robinson design with several spectacular holes, including a dramatic par-3 finisher that plays down a terrific slope.  You can get a pretty good sense of it at their Website, (http://www.terranovagolf.com). I'd say Twin Rivers is the best unknown course in Canada, simply because few golf insiders ever get there. It is worth the drive.

The Wilds at Salmonier River, a little ways outside St. John's, is also pretty good, and I also played Clovelly, a Graham Cooke course that was just so-so.

Oh, and the season likely starts in June. Anything before that and you're taking chances...

David,

The question of the when the golf season starts is tough one.  The east coast of Canada had been particularly hard hit this winter (70-90cm of snow in two days last week!!!), so I'd be very surprised if they are going before May.

Thanks for the tips.  Twin Rivers looks like my kind of course!!  If the trip come together, I will pull back this thread to see if there are any GCA'ers in the area who might want to tee it up.

David the season is 5 days in August. lol I actually have been there and could have played golf if the airlines would have let me have my clubs off the plane. It seems that whole 9/11 to 9/19 period was not a live and let live period. There are three or four courses in the St. John's area. I do pity the man who has to live there though.

John,

That's right.  I remember your emergency landing story.  Knowing you, I am sure you could reccomend a couple of good restaraunts though and I'll bet that gymnasium you stayed in had great rates.  ;)

I concur with previous respondents: Twin Rivers, Salmonier and Admiral's Green in that order.

Normally the season will start early in May.

Be prepared to play with a southpaw... there are probably more lefty golfers on "Da Rock" than anywhere else on the planet. On the range at Salmoniere when I was there three years ago, about 15 players were hitting balls and 11 of 'em were lefties.
