Druids Glen

Thanks to the Golf Channel, I was able to watch by beloved Ireland's Open at Druids Glen this weekend.  Apart from wanting to slit my wrists at the name of the course (just another attempt to have the tourists believe we are all little leprechauns), I must admit to being pleasantly surprised by the quality of the course.  I haven't played it, but it came across well on television, and I might actually give some consideration to playing it on my next trip "home."  The one discourageing feature was that almost all of the intersting holes had water -- not very "Irish"!  Still, what a great show -- is there any possible way Garcia won't be on the Ryder Cup team?  It's hard to see him losing a single point.Anyway, what did the rest of you think of Druids Glen?  Surely better than the Belfry?!?

I actually played Druids Glen last November and came away disappointed.  Like you, I thought it came across well on TV this weekend and I started to wonder if I had been too harsh in my initial opinion.  However, my wife quickly said that we had been right -- the course is nothing special.Your assessment of the back nine is absolutely right -- the holes with water are good, some of them very good, but the dry holes are zeroes.  The front has a couple of good "dry" holes, particularly 1 and 2, but the rest is just average.Overall, it's a nice spot, complete with occasional views of the Irish Sea (that they seem hell bent on hiding by planting more trees)in the distance, a terrific clubhouse and a nice rolling piece of land.  It has some nice touches -- from the road immediately behind the 2nd to the corner in the wall where the players tee off on the 3rd, to the suspension bridge to the 9th fairway, to the druids' altar near the 12th.  However, it just has too many average holes -- the 4th, 6th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 14th, 16th and 17th.  The 12th and 13th are super, with the latter a contender for the most difficult hole in Ireland.  The three pools up the 18th are hokey, but they work OK.Given how much I like the European Club (see our write up here), it was surprising that Druids Glen doesn't have more to recommend it as it is also a Pat Ruddy design.  An example of the foolishness: On a few holes (e.g., 11 and 16) I am almost certain that they had brought in gorse to plant at "strategic points."  The result is awful -- a rectangle of gorse when there isn't any other on the course.

I would just like to say I'm embarrassed to have a brother who goes all the way to Ireland and then plays an inland course!

I just look at it as a selfless, humanitarian gesture -- my pain will serve as a warning for others not to make the same mistake.  Seriously, though, I am somewhat glad to have played it as I would have wanted to after playing Ruddy's European Club.  Now I won't wonder about it any more.  Still, it is aggravating that I could have spent the time playing Wicklow GC, which looked like a lot of fun on its cliff-top setting.

The ONLY thing good about Druid Glenn is that it produced the best golfer as champion. El Nino to win the British!

Why play the Irish Open on a rather non-descript course like Druids Glen when there are so many great courses in Ireland?  Does Druids Glen pay for the right to host is?

Druids Glen has some weird holes — but, overall, the place is very enjoyable. Could the site have produced a much better golf course? Yes indeed! None-the-less, it is enjoyable...far more so that the new course which was under construction while I was there...this beast looked to be quite American and well out of place. I suspect it is opening about now and will enjoy hearing some reports from anyone who ventures out.
