Ratings and a Lenten Promise....
« on: April 02, 2003, 12:43:59 PM »
As some people give up booze, carbohydrates and even unbridled lust for Lent, can we not post anything at all about course ratings for 42 days?

I'd love that, Bob!

I just can't resist defending against misconceptions... I do promise this:  I will START no discussion about ratings, as I sure as hell believe they are given way way way too much import.

Bob,
I gave up In & Out Burger and Ice Cream. Sad thing is once Lent is over, I still cannot eat In & Out Burgers and Ice Cream.

Tom what did you give up?

Being married to a Presbyterian and having two kids baptised in that faith has weakened the strenght of my Catholicism, Tommy.  No giving up anything here.  It's fun to pick and choose what one likes from various religions....  ;)

Personally, Lent, as a period of self-reflection and repentance, is mostly symbolic, ceremonial, and highly overrated.  If what I saw during the KPII is a reflection of temperance, I have to wonder what goes on during the remaining 325 days of the year! ;)

Tommy N:

When I travel to CA I always get a hotel by an IN/OUT Burger! I can't get enough of the place!

By the way. Since giving up IN/OUT for Lent may lead to withdrawl,  might I suggest Checkers? Cheddar cheese bacon burger is the equal of our beloved double cheese at I/O.

Incidentally, I gave up Mickey Ds for lent and have been hitting Checkers regularly. Hopefully, I will be forgiven.

Gene,
I would be a total out and out, (or in this case In & Out) liar if I didn't admit an addiction to MacDonald's fries. Heck, throw the Big & Tasty in there also! You can't have a cheaper meal on the run!

My problem is I always order it with a Diet Coke, which has got to make the people who are filling the order, laugh their asses off! But what do they know! they're working at MacDonald's!

Also--For all of you including the lapse Catholics--Every Friday during Lent.......... Mickey D's Filet of Fish!!! Just $.99 on Fridays, here in SoCal during Lent! I'm told Ray Kroc started this because he too was a devout Catholic, and so was his wife Joan.

Huckster, You mean to tell me that there isn't the slightest bit of old fashion Catholic guilt going on up there in San Jose?  Do you remember me telling you how I went from being a devout USC fan to a Notre Dame die-hard?

Since we are talking Hamburgers. Tom, You being an old Valley dude, do you remember a burger place in Burbank, sort of caticorner/across the street from Burbank High called "Don's Place?" It was one of the best burgers in the world until the place burned down about 8 years ago.

Oregon Folk out there--How about the burger at Helvatia Tavern? Which is another one of those burgers you can wake-up in the middle of the night having the jones' for. Helvatia isn't far from Pumkin Ridge, and the last time I had one was when I had just got done playing--Pumpkin Ridge.

Gene, Also, everytime I'm either picking-up or dropping off at LAX, an architect/or GCA person, it always seems that we hit the In & Out right next to the airport on Sepulveda. I have been there on seperate occasions with:

Geoff Shackelford
Josh Taylor-Took him there directly after he got off of the plane from Oz! He had to make-up for the horrible meals on the plane!
Kye Goalby--an In & Out Junkie if I ever did see one.
Gil Hanse
Rodney Hines

Now that I'm hungry, I'll go eat some carrots--yum! :P

Tommy,
What do you think of Tommy Burgers? Thats first on my list whenever I make it down to SoCal foodwise.

Bob,
I like the rating blackout idea.

Tommy,

In the spirit of Lent, I think you should publish "The Tommy 25" which are the top 25 courses to give up (on) during Lenten season. How many would be Rees courses ?

Tommy:

YES YES YES YES YES!!!!!

Don's was fantastic!  I only got to know it kinda in college years and later, unfortunately, as a buddy of mine moved right up the street from it.  It became a fixture for every visit to him.... God I loved that place.  When I heard it burned down I nearly cried.  What a drag.   :'(

As for my Catholic/Jesuit guilt, well... add to all this the parental guilt I get - my Mom is a freakin' Vice Principal at St. Francis, the Catholic high school in La Canada  - and yes, you have this nailed, Tommy.  I do feel some guilt.

But I get over it by going to In N' Out.  Thank God we have those now up here....

BTW, Tommy's was another fine burger establishment during the high school years... that was or more regular haunt... one of the original ones out in Van Nuys.... ahhhh, the memories!

My brother turned me on to In n Out a few years back when we we're in Palm Springs. Now it's a definite for every trip to CA. Last time I was out I planned my departure out of Oakland so I could hit the in & out on the way to the airport before Lunch. How pathetic is that!!

Why can't someone figure out how to franchise an In & Out at the half way house?

Can't wait to read the Tommy top 25 or how about Huckster's top 25 :)

Courses or burger joints, JF?

The funny thing is if each of Tommy and I did either of those, I bet we wouldn't differ much at all.  In fact I'm sure of it.

My personal top 6 courses in the US go like this:

1. Sand Hills
2. Cypress Point
3. NGLA
4. Pine Valley (just based on faith - seeing in in person if that ever happens might make it rise for me)
5. Pebble Beach
6. Shinnecock

Tommy might re-arrange the order (and Matt Ward likely just had a coronary re #6), but I bet Tommy and I have at least 4 of those in common....

Weird thing is that this is not the first time In N Out and Tommy's have been mentioned on GCA.  I had the Tommy's burgers on my first ever trip to SoCal in 1991.  In & Out almost every time we visit the west (Vegas, too).

Huck,

How prevalent are the In & Out's in NorCal?  Any in SF or northern Bay areas?  Just might be dinner in 5 days....

Scott:

We are sadly behind SoCal in quantity of In N' Outs.  They do exist, but they are few and far between... they are however adding more all the time.

They have a website with a franchise locator... go check it out.  Odds are you'll find one within range!

Hey, bottom line re Shinnecock is we both think it's great, we just disagree on HOW great.  That is certainly fine... but read my Holy Grails of Golf post... it's one of them, without a doubt.

Loved your response in any case... hang in there, today's medicine can do wonders for the heart.   ;)

Tommy's is great, its just you better not eat there all the time. That is unless you want to try colon transplant surgery for kicks! I can't begin to tell you how many times in my youngn' days, that we* (*A scraggy bunch of head knockers from the burbs) would all load up in the car--quite jollie, if you get my drift, and made the drive to the corner of Rampart and Beverly for some heavy duty munchies. A lot of times it would be well past two in the morning!  And do you know what? You still had to stand in line! ! ! ! !

Tom, I would imagine your frequented the Tommy's across from Budweiser and the old Busch Gardens correct?

100% correct, oh wise one.   There was another newer one we went to on Sherman Way out toward Reseda, but this one by the old Busch Gardens was the most frequented spot.  Is it still there?

And you're right re these being dangerous to one's health... jeez thinking of it now both scares me, and makes me want to go back asap!  We sadly have no Tommy's in NorCal - nothing even like it, really.

We also have no Naugles... those don't exist any more either, do they?  Macho burrito....

OK, so this has absolutely nothing to do with golf course architecture... and I'm really struggling with how to tie it back... ok - question for Tommy:  are you at all familiar with Balboa and Encino golf courses (Sepulveda golf complex, 101 & Balboa Blvd., near Sepulveda dam)?  Once I was able to play "big courses" that's where I would play most as a kid... we had to take a test to be able to play as juniors... passing that was like getting the golden ticket from Willy Wonka.  Are those courses in any decent shape these days?  Have changes been made over the years?  I haven't played either since 1981, I'd guess, and I'd love to go back and do so.
