While going through Geoff's new book again (for the 353rd time), the photo of the 5th at Mid-Ocean really struck me and reminded me of a conversation I had with George Bahto at the Renaissance Cup: What a shame that there are now bushes, etc. between the green and the water. In my one round there, I was rewarded with what I thought was a pretty darn good drive down the left side by having a blind 7-iron over a palm tree.  Silly and criminal as the green is outstanding.  In fact, that is my favorite approach on the course -- why not let us enjoy it more?In that old photo, you can see the entire hole from the tee.Tom Doak: I know Renaissance Design is working with the club.  Any plans/thoughts for the 5th?

I played the course again in early September and had the same thought upon seeing the old photo in Geoff's book. Wouldn't the hole be that much more enthralling without the noxious vegetation? As it plays presently, you may have a better view of the green from the right side of the fairway.

John, I couldn't agree more.  That was one of the most striking old photos in the book to me.  The hole looked sooo much better without all the shrubs and trees along the pond!

The vegetation has grown quite a bit in the last few years and perhaps it would be appropriate for Geoff to contact the club and forward the old picture with an explanation.

Not to change the topic or anything, but I think it is more important that we dwell for a while on my hole-in-one at the Biarritz - a smooth one iron and in she went. The group standing on the 14th tee is still in the clubhouse hoping I will buy them drinks.
