I actually had the opportunity to play with Larry Lambrecht (Emerald Gems book on Irish courses) last summer, and he says it is really a function of the light, mainly towards the end of the day, and getting up high to get the right angles.

I used to think of that as one of my all time great tap-in pars, and it only because of this insane website that I see I actually got a 6 for leaving in the pin.  ;)

The bottom picture looks to be the 8th at Pebble Beach.

My eyes aren't too good, but the top one could be the 3rd at Pacific Dunes.
