I just hung up with John who is in St. Andrews for a Rules Conference. He walked The Old Course on Sunday (when it was closed) and had the very best of times. The Discussion Group has been talking about great first holes, but how about St. Andrews' finish? There will never be a better walk than the one up the 18th and when you combine it with the difficulties of the 17th, I reckon it makes for golf's perfect finish, with the harder hole first. Why don't more (or any) modern architects follow a similar pattern?John also remains bullish on the merits of Lundin Links.  A certain Michigan resident gives it low marks but who else has played Lundin? I haven't seen it but John's description sure makes me want to get here.

I liked Lundin Golf Club.  Great course with a lot of great members, and is pretty interesting to see in old pictures like British Golf Links.  Back then it was still part of Leven Golf Club. Here is a website link: www.lundingolfclub.co.uk/index.html

For a hard 17th and a short easy 18th, Gil Hanse designed the St. Andrews pattern at his new course in Avondale, Pa, Inniscrone G.C.

The 18th as short and easy?  Maybe in length and width, but end up in that valley and see if you can say easy.In my short three weeks of living at St. Andrews where I unlike most people studied the course profusely, I never saw a hole that was three-putted more then "Tom Morris."Maybe Tom Doak and Brad Klein, both who lived there can back me up on this.

Tom Naccarato:       About the 18th at St. Andrews, leave the short and delete the easy. I've never been there.         Hanse's Inniscrone 18th is short too, once you've made the 220 yard carry.
