England from the air - 1

Here's a start at Google Earthing GB golf clubs.  Just use the postcode.  I've added some commentary and given websites where I can find them.  Feel free to point out errors or omissions.

Merseyside

Allerton Municipal (1924 – nice part of Liverpool, 27 holes, quite rolling) L18 3JT

Arrowe Park (1931 – one of our better municipals, parkland) CH49 5LW

Bidston (1913 – some BUDA CUP attendees may have spotted it as they came off the motorway for Wallasey.  Very low lying, but there are two or three good holes) http://www.bidstongolf.co.uk/
CH44 2HR

Blundells Hill (new club, no date given) http://www.blundellshill.co.uk/
L35 6NA

Bootle (1934 pay-and-play, said to be good.  Designed by Fred Stevens, apparently) L30 2PP

Bowring (1913 public) L36 4HD

Brackenwood (1933 – public, quite spacious) CH63 2LY

Bromborough (1903 – Original design JE Hassall, 1972 Hawtree redesign.  Host to 2005 English Amateur Championship.  A strong course) http://www.bromboroughgolfclub.org.uk/
CH63 0NW

Caldy (1907 – original design by one of the Morrises of Hoylake, most recent redesign Donald Steel.  Part parkland, part downland, part near-links) http://www.caldygolfclub.co.uk/
CH48 1NB

Childwall (1913 – Braid, handsome clubhouse) http://www.childwallgolfclub.co.uk/pages/index.php
L27 2YB

Eastham Lodge (1973 – founded when their former course at Ellesmere Port was lost to housing, commerce or industry.  An ingenious course on a very restricted site – Hawtree, later amended Hemstock.  Note the plentiful gorse near the clubhouse) http://www.easthamlodgegolfclub.co.uk/
CH62 0AP

Formby (1884 – Willie Park/James Braid/Hawtree and Taylor/Donald Steel.  Classy links course with many holes routed through woods) http://www.formbygolfclub.co.uk/FormbyGolfClub.html
L37 1LQ

Formby Hall (mid 1990s – higher end new course.  I do not know who designed it)
http://www.formbyhallgolfclub.co.uk/
L37 0AB

Formby Ladies’ (1896 – a gorgeous links course set within the men’s course.  Lovely photos on the web site)
http://www.formbyladiesgolfclub.co.uk/
L37 1YH

Grange Park (1891 - a parkland course about which I know nothing)
http://www.grangeparkgolfclub.co.uk/
WA10 3AD

Haydock Park (1877 – an old club with a James Braid layout.  Well reputed)
http://www.haydockparkgc.co.uk/home/
WA12 0HX

Hesketh (1885 – JOF Morris course with plenty of links elements)
http://www.heskethgolfclub.co.uk/
PR9 9QQ

Heswall (1902 – Jack Morris/Vardon/Pennink/Steel.  I am very fond of Heswall.  It is not a links, but it overlooks the Dee Estuary and there are some handsome holes)
http://www.heswallgolfclub.com/
CH60 8PB

Hillside (1911 – One of the famous Southport clubs, sandwiched between Birkdale and S&A.  The back nine [Hawtree] ventures into some giant dunes.  I like it, but others on GCA are lukewarm.)
http://www.hillside-golfclub.co.uk/
PR8 2LU

Houghwood (1996 – Newish, not known to me, designed by N Pearson)
http://www.houghwoodgolfclub.co.uk/
WA11 8RL

Hoylake Municipal (1933 – a former ladies’ club revamped by Braid.  Used as the practice ground at 2006 Open Champioship.  A genuine links – very flat.)
http://www.hoylakegolfclub.com/
CH47 4BG

Huyton and Prescot (1905 – Braid parkland course and an extraordinary clubhouse.)
http://huytonandprescotgolf.co.uk/index.html
L36 1UA

Kirkby (1967 - municipal)
L32 4SS

Leasowe (1891 – John Ball course, familiar to those who stayed at the Leasowe Castle Hotel.  Links, but hidden from the sea by high sea wall.  Dreadfully flat.)
http://www.leasowegolfclub.co.uk/
CH46 3RD

Lee Park (1954 – a CK Cotton course about which I know no more)
L27 3YA

Prenton (1905 – part-MacKenzie, updated by Hawtree in 1978.  Parkland, with a very good run of holes from 2nd to 6th)
http://www.prentongolfclub.co.uk/
CH42 8LW

Royal Birkdale (1889 – Open Championship course popular with the competitors and spectators [excellent viewing from the dunes], less popular with GCA opinion makers.  Scroll down to South-West on Google Earth)
http://www.royalbirkdale.com/
PR8 2LX

Royal Liverpool (1869 – Google image is a few years old – it retains the old 17th and 18th)
http://www.royal-liverpool-golf.com/
CH47 4AL

Sherdley Park (1974 – St Helens municipal, said to be one of the better in the region)
WA9 5DE

Southport and Ainsdale (1906 – famous old Braid course, once a Ryder Cup site, separated from Hillside only by a railway line)
http://www.sandagolfclub.co.uk/
PR8 3LG

Southport Golf Links (1912 – a full-length municipal course beside the sea at the north end of the promenade.)
http://www.golf-england.co.uk/courses.php?course=18443
PR9 0JS

Southport Old Links (1926 – not as old as the other Southport courses, a tree-lined parkland course, well thought of locally.)
PR9 7QS

Wallasey (1891 – Tumbling links course, totally different from Royal Liverpool, one of the BUDA CUP venues in 2006)
http://www.wallaseygolfclub.com/
CH45 8LA
Warren (1911 – a 9-hole municipal just across the road [and railway] from Wallasey.  There are a couple of extraordinary, old-fashioned links holes on a tract of land across the road which divides the course, but condition was dreadful when last I played there)
CH45 0JA

West Derby (1896 – Parkland course very close to the city centre)
L12 9HQ

West Lancashire (1873 – old links club at the southern extremity of the dunes which stretch [interrupted] up to Southport.  Quite austere, but with some bold holes at the northern end where the dunes are higher.  CK Cotton)
http://www.westlancashiregolf.co.uk/
L23 8SZ

Wirral Ladies’ (1894 – A charming little course with tiny greens, making it a great test of the short game.  Quite a lot of heather [visible on Google Earth].  Beautifully conditioned.  Very friendly members and staff.)
CH43 6TS

Woolton (1901 – a shortish course, but remarkably rural given its proximity to both Liverpool and its airport)
L25 7TZ
