I am driving up for the Ryder Cup and we (two of us) are looking for a game on an out of the way course. Brad Klein in his interview here talked about Essex CC? Has anybody heard of it or can give me any particulars? It sounds perfect. Also, Ran once mentioned Winchester CC as a well kept secret for a Ross course? Any tips on that one as well?Thank you for any suggestions.

All those Ross courses in the Boston metro area will be jam-packed that week.  My suggestions:  Whitinsville, or any of his courses in Rhode Island.  Worcester CC on the outskirts is not bad, either; and Brae Burn is as good as any of them, but it'll be packed.

Going to Boston for the Ryder Cup is like going to Great Britain for the Open and then hoping to play. Don't do it!! It is the single worst time to try and play. There will simply be too many people everywhere.

I don't know about the crowd situation but as for Winchester, it was a great surprise. If you get a chance, do it - I would be very surprised if you came away disappointed. It is the only course in the greater Boston area that I've seen, so I don't know relative to the others how it stacks up. Klein's description of Essex did sound quite promising. I know Frank Hannigan is a big fan of Salem.

If I were going to play golf in the Boston area, Essex County would be my 1st choice. In 1996, I did a story for INSIDE GOLF called AM with a greenkeeper, and covered the Womens Mid Am there in 1995 as well. It is the 1st course that Ross worked on in the USA. Every green is different, and every day is different. Don't be surprised if you get to play. It may well be far enough away from Brookline, and myopic visitors might have their heads turned in another  direction.

To: ScottI will also agree with Tom Doak on making the trip down to Rhode Island that week.  Yes, Winchester and Essex are both wonderful Ross gems, but getting on them that week will be very difficult. My suggestions in Rhode Island are: Wannamoisett CC, Newport CC and the highly underrated Rhode Island CC.  I was fortunate to have worked at Wannamoisett for over 3 years as an assistant golf professional and just think it is a great Ross golf course.  My second favorite is Rhode Island CC followed by Newport CC.  I have always said that if Rhode Island CC had the greens that Wannamoisett has it would easily be a top 100 golf course!

To: TEPaulYes, I am familiar with the Misquamicut Club in Westerly.  I have played it about 4 times and it has somewonderful golf holes but i would still recommend Wannamoisett, RICC and Newport over Misquamicut.  Also, another great Ross golf course right in Providence is Metacomet CC.  Ask T. Doak about Metacomet, I believe I could quote him as saying that the 14th there is one of the best par 4's in America.  I think that is the hole he referred to.  Anyway, I would strongly recommend you play Misquamicut if you have the opportunity.  Just be careful of that brutal par 3 18th hole up the hill it is a killer!

i highly recommend winchester. the terrain is rolling and the course has some very good par fours under 400 yards (remember them?). the 6th hole par three is a stand out across a ravine to a shelf green. 9-12 is a great stretch with the best being the spilt fairway on the par five 12th.people talk about chicago and new york as golf capital's - for courses under 6,600 yards, i would go to boston.

To Steve Mann & B Williams:I played Misquamicut in the member-guest this year-first time there. See the comments in the "What makes an Eden" and the "Best opening holes" posts. I'm fascinated by the place but I can't compare to the others in R.I. since I've never seen them but have heard the ones you mentioned are terrific. I guess with Ross having a summer place in Little Compton he must have given some of the R.I. course added attention. B. Williams;I'd appreciate it if you would describe the concept and the playability of the par 5 #12 split fairway hole you mentioned above. Particularly how the split (alternate?) fairway works. I love the alternate fairway concept but I can't think of any I really like. The 15th at Seminole used to drive me nuts (maybe that's what the design was intended to do). I always felt like if I used the safer route I was continuosly going way out around a sweeping corner, up into the prevailing wind and sometimes weaving between telephone polls with those spaced out palm trees in the split. That hole has two ponds separating the progressive landing areas and it was the site of the most extraordinary water hazard ruling involving Sam Snead in  a big tournament.

I hope I'm not too late for your trip to Boston, but an hour north of Essex you'll find a better Ross course than any of the Boston gem's. Portland Country Club will go toe to toe with the best of them. While your on the way, stop and see Walter Travis' greens at Cape Arundel and the sea side holes at Prouds Neck (Styles and Van Kleek.) I guarantee you won't have the crowds.

There is little downside in living in Australia but this - you get a great tip but can't do anything about it (at least for a while).

It might be wee bit far, but Cape Cod has a number of fine courses. Hyanannisport, Oyster Harbors, the underrated Eastward Ho! and the fun 9-holer at Truro.

To Bruce Hepner,I agree with you 100%.  Portland CC is a fine D. Ross layout, I played 36 holes there about two years ago.  You really get to hit every club in your bag on that golf course, that is why I enjoyed it so much.  I have not seen or played Cape Arundel but have heard good things about it.  What else can you tell me besides the interesting greens?
