Royal Melbourne Conditions for this week's Heinikin
« on: February 02, 2004, 06:51:43 PM »
Below is a direct quote from the European Tour's website.  I confirm there is very little rough, and the course is looking an absolute picure. (so long as you like don't mind a little brown)

"The course will be relatively hard and fast due to drought, although some recent rain has slightly softened this. The lack of rough and some of the slopes on fairways will make it in some ways just as difficult as the surrounding scrub which is very tough will be more in play. This week is all about finding the fairway as pure striking will be essential to hold the greens. You must put the ball in the right part of the green, to ensure a putt from below the hole. We are close to the coast and the wind direction and strength is normally a major factor. This is a composite course of the East course (6 holes) and the West course (12 holes)."

It should be a great week.

Cheers,

George

George,

The conditions in Melbourne this January were very mild but mainly dry. This year has not been as dry and hot as last year but we're still enduring a drought. However, last week there was heavy rain and flooding in Melbourne and that was followed up by some more rain yesterday. As a result you can probably expect less brown than was predicted in that report (RM, like all sandbelt courses, drains extremely well so it's not going to be all that soft by Thursday). you probably won't see much rough but that's not unusual at RM anyway. However, hot weather and northerly winds are being predicted for later in the week so the conditions are likely to be hard and fast by the weekend and we may well see the return of RM's lightning fast greens.

George,

I went down to Royal Melbourne today - as you said it is looking absolutely superb.  Greens fairly firm, fairways running nicely.  Almost no rough.

The greens aren't as quick as I've seen in the past, but I'm sure that they'll be like glass by Thursday, when hot weather is predicted.

Chris,

Perhaps an informal GCA get together at the Heinekin would be worth organising?

I will head out there on Saturday, and hopefully Sunday as well.  What are your, and anyone elses, plans?

George

PS Are you caddying?

George,

Unfortunately my club championship prevents me from attending the Heineken at the weekend - but I'll be there on Thursday and possibly Friday.  Two days of caddying at Woodlands was enough for the time being  :P (now Mike is going to kill me!)

Of course, if I choke like a dog on Saturday, missing the matchplay stages of B grade, I'll be at RM on Sunday licking my wounds.  However, I wouldn't recommend that anyone try to talk to me if thats the case!

If anyone wants to catch up on the Thursday or Friday, send me a message.

Thursday is 80 degrees and no wind, and they're scoring like it was the Hope. Michael Campbell is the early leader and Ernie is tearing up the front. Michael Clayton -1 through four and he'll have to hit the gas pedal to make the cut.

great comment by Adam Scott on TGC tonight about Royal Melbourne...,

"it'll be fun to get away from playing 'Tiger golf' for a week and actually think and use some imagination".

and this coming from a guy that has patterned his swing after Tiger.

Darn,
I am still guessing he shot the course record?
What a stupid question eh?

Well his final scorecard read,
4,4,2,4,3,3,4,2,3.29
4,2,3,3,3,5,3,4,4.31
                  60

To watch golf on TV this is what I wait for! I hardly ever watch the PGA Tour anymore. I don't care what they shoot but those scores are a bit scary!
