Neglected Colt course and a puzzle.
« on: January 23, 2004, 01:55:15 PM »
I think these are the same hole.  The general shape of the hole is right as is the mounding around the green (remnants of bunkers too).  As is the filled in bunker depression in the background (1st fairway).  The hill in the background however, doesn't look quite right, steeper in the modern pic.  So they could be different holes, but I couldn't see any other candidates in an old aerial and they are both the 18th holes.

Whadya think?

Either way it's a good illustration of how the Birmingham area sprawled into the mess it is now.  And the old hole looks cool (green is still cool)!  The course is now a muni and has some character but lost some land to the M5 and is pretty badly neglected.

It's possible that the 2nd picture was taken about 20-30
yards to the right of where the 1st one was taken. In the 2nd
picture, the bottom of the stream valley is perpendicular to
the line of the shoot; in the 1st, the shoot is to the left of
perpendicular. I wonder if you went 20-30 (or whatever)
yards left of where the 2nd picture was taken, the steeper hill
on the left would not be picked up in the picture, and
everything would match up (particularly the distant mountain
in the top right).
