St Mellons is in Cardiff, Wales. I think it's the best inland course in Wales, certainly the most charming and is well off the tourist track. The terrain rolls perfectly for golf even if the soil is a little heavy... plateau greens. It's quite a late Colt&Co course... 1930s.
Definitely include it on a Welsh intinerary.
Some of the shaping reminds me of Muirfield.
Short par 3 11th
One of the toughest Colt par 3s I've seen (to par or birdie). Plays 220+ and the green tilts strongly back to front with a tier. OB to the left to complicate matters.
Closer
Approach at short par 4 4th.
5th
Great rolling long par 4, 6th
Appraoch at par 5 7th. Ground falls quite sharply on the right
Par 8th
Lumpy fairway on monster long par 4 10th.
10th green.
Unusual double green at 11th and 13th (par 5 coming up the hill). the 14th plateau green is in the background.
Superb par 5 12th. But noice the 3 or 4 filled bunkers
Would be an even better "tacking" hole with them.
Rolling terrain at 16th.
No real weak links on this course apart from maybe the relatively simple 1st.
