Although the course would not be ready for years, this would be a huge boost for the golf tourism in the area. I have been talking about the NW coast since 2004 as one of the best runs of links golf around in terms of travel, quality of the courses and the cost. Adding this course, if it is bulit properly, to Carne, Enniscrone, Donegal, Sligo etc would only make the NW coast better and better for the existing courses.

Would have loved to see what Eddie Hackett could with this piece of land.

Google Earth labels that Bartragh Island, County Mayo, Ireland. Seems you've got it.

That looks spectacular.  I hope he gets to build it.

It doesn't seem far off shore at all, Brian.

Here's a link on Google Earth

Ok. I've now heard that this project is not progressing at the moment, but they still have plans to develop in the future, given permissions...

I would rather he bought it and you built it! Out of interest, does he have a ghost designer?

The "Faldo" courses I'm aware of are Schmidt-Curley. Not sure if everything he hashis name on is with them, though.

Those courses were the very early ones (e.g. Chart Hills)... Guy Hockley was Faldo's designer / partner when he set up his own practice in 1999... Guy now has his own company but I think still does some work for Faldo... I'm not sure if there is another designer involved or not...

EDIT - Note Tom's post below... I was thinking of Steve Smyers for Chart Hills, not Schmidt-Curly

Head of Faldo Golf Design is Andy Haggar, Andy worked for European Golf Design for a number of years before joining Faldo.

When the tide is low, you can walk across the estuary from Enniscrone GC to Bartra.  Its a pretty spectacular part of the world.

Also, note that several of Faldo's early designs [including Chart Hills] were done in collaboration with Steve Smyers, not with Brian Curley, who did team with Faldo on a few, too.

Looks like it would be a good place to play when the tide is out and the pond has receded. ;)

Jonathan,

The only two completed Faldo courses I have seen / played are Lough Erne in Ireland and the Oceanico course in the Algarve... They must have both opened around the same time; 2007 / 2008.... I liked some of the detail on both of those courses... Do you know if they were Guy Hockley designs or Andy Haggar designs?

Thanks,
Ally

Ally,
I think Guy designed those, I remember the guys were building Lough Erne the same time as we were doing Farnham Estate both difficult ground conditions in terrible weather.
Andy designed Lough Rynn, I am not sure if this project got finished, but it was a nice site with the golf playing round the lake.

Thanks for spotting that video and for the link. It sure sounds like a golf course is going to happen there.

My guess is it’s still more dream than reality. The entire island sits within an SAC.

Donal -

Thanks for the update and current information. It is a shame to read how the manor house on the island has gone to ruin.

I enjoyed the video and the dream.

Now I will be more realistic and just imagine a world where Enniscrone redesigns their logo.

Even if there was no protection for the land itself, access across the estuary would have presented cost and planning issues. It is something special for sure and development would probably have benefited Enniscrone.
@John - I might have agreed at one time but having spent a lot of time at Enniscrone over the last 15 years, I wouldn't change it.  The logo speaks to a club that could not be less pretentious, more welcoming or in a more spectacular setting.
