Faldo's Island

Nick Faldo has been given the go ahead by the High Court to complete the purchase of Bartra Island off the county Mayo coast. The former British Open winner intends to build his dream golf course on the island. Miss Justice Carroll made her finding when giving judgement in favour of a previous owner of the island, Mary Molloy of Killala Bay.

My sister and brother-in-law are building a "Holiday Home" in County Mayo west of Westport. Without knowing the real details, my guess is it will take Faldo time to get it built, and there probably will be no private airports in County Mayo !

With out knowing how far offshore Bartra Island is, my guess is that travel will be by either boat or helicopter. Currently, the real big money flies into Shannon and helicopters all over Ireland. The moderate money drives.

Depending on where they can put the dock, the boat ride from the course at Enniscrone / Inishcrone would be no more than four miles.  (The island is right on the Mayo / Sligo border).

It would also be a feasible combination (in the summer, at least) with Westport, Carne, or Rosses Point.  Maybe even Donegal, for that matter.

And the inverse:  once you're there, you might get "stuck" there.  

"Honey, I can't leave, no planes or boats can exit the island."  With a wink and a nod as you lace up your golf shoes.

Have the Irish rolled over on their environmental restrictions against building on linksland now that they are struggling financially?

Strange, since it was EU regulations rather than Irish regulations which limited the construction of links ground in the first place.  Maybe the EU is too busy with other things to bother now.

I'm not sure. I think it's a European thing, but I know another place that has been stopped developing linksland by Brussels recently.

I suppose if you can get around it in Scotland, it can be got around in Ireland too.

All environmental and land usage issues aside, the piece of property looks amazing, as do the remnants of whatever structures where on the southeast portion of the island.

The proximity to Enniscrone will make for a great combination.

Hoping that if this does get built, the best golf use of the land is the result.
