Wish List for Ran's Write Ups
« on: December 23, 2003, 12:54:55 PM »
What course or courses would you most like to see Ran profile in his Courses By Country?

Personally, I would love to see the following:

Newport
Stonewall I& II

ForkaB

I'd first like to see him tackle the "The Next Fifty."  As far as I can see he hasn't made a dent in that list in the 3 or so years I've been on this site! :o

I look forward to his next European visit.  He's still got some terribly well-known British courses to visit, but if I could persuade him to stay on for a little longer I'd like him to see:

Some of Simpson's classics in Belgium such as RGC des Fagnes and Royal Belgique.
Some of the classics in the Netherlands such as The Hague and Hilversum.
Some of the older British courses which have never sought the limelight yet continue to delight connoisseurs and are not already on his list, such as Tadmarton Heath, Luffenham Heath, Sandiway, Whittington Heath, Berkhamstead, Bull Bay, Nefyn, Yelverton, Parkstone, Broadstone, West Cornwall, Woodbridge, Seacroft, Liphook, Cavendish, Wirral Ladies', Lanark, Stoneham, to name but a very few.

Fear not (seasonal words), I shall find out exactly when he's coming, confiscate his passport and not let him return to an airport until he's reviewed everything European on his list and a few more, plus some 150 or so of our British hidden gems.

Gentlemen and others...

For all of your wish lists, each course may be written up, photographed and submitted to Ran for posting. Go to it!

Craig Rokke:

I was just fixin' to list Fernindina Beach Municipal and you listed it first--you dog! Even the great Ran Morrissett is not capable of doing that course justice in one of his write-ups. To do that little hidden gem justice in a write up takes a particular architectural acuity that only I possess!

TE-
That little gem you speak of, Fernindina, has been shrouded in mystery for a number of years now. I'm sure it's charm is undeniable. I bet it would make for a very interesting write-up....by a qualified author, of course.  ;)

Additional Comments

This club has three nine hole courses that are played in three eighteen hole combinations. The West/South Course combination is the tournament course. The West Course is long and its fairways are wide open. There is a 600-yard, par 5, on the West Course. The South Course is where accuracy counts more than distance. There is an abundance of wildlife and water hazards on this course. Locals consider this course to be the perfect Florida scenic course. The North Course, the shortest of the three, has undulating greens.

The two reviews associated with this write-up on golfcourse.com give the course very high praise.  For a while, Tom, I thought this course was a figment of your imagination.  It sounds like we need to hear your detailed analysis sometime in the coming year.  Cornish and Whitten list a Fernadina Beach GC designed by Ed Matteson with a 3rd nine added by Joe Lee.  There is nothing listed in the architect profiles under Tom Bird Songs or Ed Matteson.

Tom Paul,

I suspect they weren't playing an estimated 85,000 rounds a year (estimated) at Fernandina when you were frequenting the course.  That is an absurd number of rounds--nearly 233 players a day!

I'd just like to see him post more in general.  Maybe I've missed it, but I don't think I've seen a post from him in quite a long time.  If he has posted, it has been rare and infrequent!  I wonder why?

Only Paul Cowley and I will ever know why I consider Fernindina Beach Municipal to be a great hidden gem!

TOMMY BIRD SONGS designed the course??? That's fantastic! I don't know anythng about Tommy Bird Songs as a golf architect but this is all starting to make sense. I believe Tommy Bird Songs was a Timucuan Indian that was approximately 7' tall and completely covered with tatooes. Some say he was born in the 15th century and it's true that the only people who've ever actually seen him own flasks and really "GET" the essence of golf course architecture! If you're someone who doesn't "get it" with golf architecture you'll never be able to understand why Fernindina Beach Municipal is a hidden gem and you'll definitely never be able to see Tommy Bird Songs! If you're someone who "gets it" just a little bit with golf architecture you may be able to smell Tommy Bird Songs, though, but that's about all!

The Fernandina Beach GC is on the right of this picture. ;)
I thought Inwood had an unfortunate location. It's clear the site selection is what's kept this course from being better known.

redanman;

I've never met Paul Cowley but the spirit of Tommy Bird Songs has told me in no uncertain terms that Paul Cowley "gets it". Would you like me to ask Tommy Bird Songs if you "get it"?
