Holiday Tidings and a poem
« on: December 24, 2003, 08:37:22 AM »
My wishes that everyone here experiences this next year:

Seaside Golf

How straight it flew, how long it flew,
It clear'd the rutty track
And soaring, disappeared from view
Beyond the bunker's back -
A glorious, sailing, bounding drive
That made me glad I was alive.

And down the fairway, far along
It glowed a lonely white;
I played an iron sure and strong
And clipp'd it out of sight,
And spite of grassy banks between
I knew I'd find it on the green.

And so I did. It lay content
Two paces from the pin;
A steady putt and then it went
Oh, most surely in.
The very turf rejoiced to see
That quite unprecedented three.

Ah! Seaweed smells from sandy caves
And thyme and mist in whiffs,
In-coming tide, Atlantic waves
Slapping the sunny cliffs,
Lark song and sea sounds in the air
And splendour, splendour everywhere

Sir John Betjeman

Noel;

Thanks for sharing.  Any chance of an "Ode to Las Vegas" encore?  ;) ;D

Have a wonderful Holiday season, my friend!

Miguel,

I'm counting on a ode to vegas work.. the problem is I'll only be there to scribe the Naccarato-Childs-Cirba escapades!

I know that NAF doesn't want improper credit for that poem -- because when I told him I liked it, he was quick to properly credit it -- to Sir John Betjeman.

Jethro Tull Another Christmas Song    (lyrics...)

I hope everybody's ringing on their own bell, this fine morning.
Hope everyone's connected to that long distance phone.
Old man, he's a mountain.
Old man, he's an island.
Old man, he's a - walking says
``I'm going to call, call all my children home. ''

Hope everybody's dancing to their own drum this fine morning -
The beat of distant Africa or a Polish factory town.
Old man, he's calling for his supper.
Calling for his whisky.
Calling for his sons and daughters, yeah -
Calling all his children round.

Sharp ears are tuned in to the drones and chanters warming.
Mist blowing round some headland, somewhere in your memory.
Everyone is from somewhere -
Even if you've never been there.
So take a minute to remember the part of you
That might be the old man calling me.

How many wars you fighting out there, this winter's morning?
Maybe it's always time for another Christmas song.
Old man he's asleep now.
Got appointments to keep now.
Dreaming of his sons and daughters, and proving -
Proving that the blood is strong.

(Ian Anderson)

Best wishes of health to all and to the troops overseas, we salute you.
