Great short par 3’s where the green is open in front

What about 5 and 8 at Eden? At least very good?

Yes, both at least very good.  I think 8 is slightly better than 5 but would happily elevate both.

8 is a cracker. The only features which let it down are the pointless and unattractive bunkers.

The left side bunker was the site of probably the best sand shot I've ever played, so I don't mind the bunkering. 


I do think that the left side bunker adds something.  Getting up onto the top tier from there requires a more demanding shot than were it rough, and makes you decide between that high risk shot and playing to the lower level, away from the pin, leaving a tough 2 putt.

Not sure I agree. I would rather be in sand. Besides that, balls would likely kick further away from the green if there is no bunker.

How about #5 at Royal Melbourne West?  It is 142 yds from short tees (Red) and 176 from "Blue" tees (actually listed at 175 in GCA's course description/review).

That’s a good point. It seems like the commonality is even if the green is open in front, there’s still something there – a false front, a mound, something like that.

Not often we struggle with ID’ing something around these parts. I’ve yet to really be convinced of the greatness of the hole type. Utility? Absolutely. Greatness? Probably extremely hard to design an open short one-shotter for that.

Never seen the hole (so I can't judge if it's "great") but I appreciate you highlighted it and the way it can be played.

It is consistently praised as among the upper tier of holes at Streamsong. Perhaps not so much when the hole location is on the upper tier. Depending on the hole location, it can play anywhere between 90-170 yards as the green is 52 yards deep. From the tees to the center are 90-150 yards. There is an alternate tee where the approach would not be open in the front.

Brings to mind the 4th hole at Jeffersonville. About 140 to the middle of an open in front, narrow, elongated hourglass shaped green, with steep drop off in back, and deep bunkers on either side.  Great short hole designed by Ross.
