Your Imaginary Round - And why?
« on: Yesterday at 12:19:17 AM »
For me the imaginary round has long been Myopia Hunt Club. Give me a day on those hallowed grounds and I can leave this world in peace - but why?

1. The original architect, Herbert Leeds, remains intact.
2. The club is not influenced by contemporary trends.

2 years ago almost to the day, I had my first real chance to play a bucket list type course I thought I'd never have the chance to see.  I re-arranged my patient schedule, booked a last minute flight and rental car and flew half way cross country.  I ended up being a bit disappointed.  The course was great and the experience pleasant.  For me I realized my expectations were too high.  It wasn't all that different than some other courses I have had the chance to play.  I didn't really have a connection to the place other than others said it was the best so I thought it should be.

I guess the saying never meet your hero's is somewhat applicable for me.

For the longest time, this used to be an epic once-in-a-lifetime trip to hit a few bucket list courses with a few friends.

But now, it will remain imaginary, as these days I pine for the one thing I can't have....youth and health.  And a round with my golf buddy, on a glorious summer day at our favorite course, playing in our prime from years past, hitting great shots (at least by our standards) in one last match play.

I replay the last round of golf I had with my Dad. He was a hero of mine. He was a chaplain in New Guinea and the Philippines in WW2, Panmunjom in Korea, and Viet Nam. He was gentle and kind. He only played golf because I enjoyed it. Our last round was the back nine at Old Channel Trail in MI, near his home. He was about 90 and had balance issues, so I teed the ball up for him and got it out of the cup. He only hit the ball about forty feet high, but the ball ran pretty well on those firm fairways. It is a memory I cherish.
Where there is no love, put love; there you will find love.
