if it is the one I am thinking about off the tee it was more of a wind blow than defined bunker. It will be a big improvement on the scrub though.

I played Ganton in an open competition yesterday.  My first visit in a decade.


Since I was last there a lot (and I mean a LOT) of gorse has gone.  It's a huge improvement.  In a fourball in which I was the high handicapper we lost a couple of balls but to genuinely atrocious shots, not tightness.  In fact, bar a couple of spots (the drives on 9 and 16 are tight) I think the course played and felt reasonably wide (albeit that the bunkering remains as tough as ever).


After a wet winter of muddy lies at home the condition of the course was extraordinary, firm, fast greens, run on fairways.  The "inland links" tag has never felt truer.

Nice to hear. Ganton is a very special place. I cannot believe it has been nearly a decade since my visit.

Good to hear Mark. I would like to see Ganton again if the stars align.

On the (very slight) downside, where once was gorse has become, in some places, sand scrapes (I didn't get a picture but Gregor did and posted it on Instagram (youth these days)).  Not sure I'm a fan, and not sure how long they'll have the will to maintain it as such.


Also worth adding, over and above the discussion of the course, that Ganton Golf Club is a wonderful, welcoming golf club.  Very clearly a "proper" club but very little pretension or arrogance.  They can't have got the top Yorkshire golf club memo.

Are there more scrapes beside the one on 17-18? I was thrilled to hear this was restored.

Why are folks so down on the scrapes? They look better than ratty rough. Good change of pace imo.

From recollection, there are scrapes on 2, 8, 9, and 10 as well as 17 and 18.  Some quite big areas and I wonder how much they'll add to the maintenance cost.


I don't have an issue with 17 and 18 but am less convinced by the others.
