I suspect most links courses are at their best on a dry, warmish day in March when the rough will be down but there can also be some decent run.
I think Muirfield's rough is exaggerated most of the time - it's no worse than any other championship course (excepting TOC). It's also the case that there is nearly always a side to miss where the rough is less bad than the other

Don't you dare lump me in with those two headbangers. One doesn't know where he's been and the other doesn't know what he said !

Hilarious. Please accept my apologies.

Bidermann - I am a huge Dick Wilson fan and fell in love with this place.
2nd is Deepdale - who many on this forum have pooped on. Even played it twice and enjoyed even more 2nd time.
I have been wanting to visit Meadow Brook for some time.
FYI… I am a member of a Dick Wilson course in Louisiana.

Paul,
I “grew up” playing Cog Hill 4 in the late 70s and early 80s. Maybe it is more Lee than Wilson but it was a great course that gets short shrift on here. The fairways had plenty of width, water was parallel with one exception that actually was changed, the greens were tiered but not in a repetitive way, and the holes moved both ways. Yes, heavily bunkered but most of the greens had a safe opening. I have not played there since the Rees Jones renovation, but the Wilson/Lee original deserves a better reputation.

While respected in the rankings (58 GM, 76 GD) The Valley Club at Montecito is a favorite of mine. It has a great variety of holes and elevation changes weaving through barranca and native land. The closing open stretch 15-18 is fabulous with the clubhouse on the peak. They keep the bunkers in typical MacKenzie sharp edges, with greens that have severity in spots but not over the top. An aspect I noticed is that there are very few true forced carries to the green on approaches. You may have a bunker favoring one side entry, but typically you have room to run the ball in.
I have it solidly in the top 50 and feel it gets overlooked for it is difficult to access. Weather is maybe the best in the US as well. Splendid course and setting.
