Me either. Long time tour players I know feel similarly.
Friends who know and like him don’t argue with the characterization that he’s just a “suit.”
His resume and track record really aren't all that. Tyler Dennis is FAR more (pick your adjective: qualified, capable, competent, intelligent, etc...) and should be the Commissioner over absentee Jay.
The primary job of any CEO is to identify and repel external threats.
Jay is truly elite as a trench warfare operative. As you noted, he is a complete screwball and despite going MIA (rehab?) for an extended period of time was able to keep his job, and completely marginalize Jimmy Dunne -- stunning, frankly.
He failed to do so and then responded by upping the purses to keep the elite players.
Did he "keep the elite players"...?? He lost more than a dozen Major Champions with close to 30 major titles between them.
Is he like Roger Goodell of the NFL: doing the bidding for the elite players just as Roger does it for the owners?
The two situations are in no way analogous.

The misplaced longevity of Jay Monahan will eventually be an inevitable HBS or Wharton case study.
His abject failure to protect what was effectively a monopoly, ignore the wishes of the majority of his player assets, alienate so many corporate sponsors (and the game’s senior financial haymaker), and diminish the favorability of his primary product….all while pocketing enormous sums of money may inspire some, but ultimately define a significant business failure. It’s only a matter of time.
Pro golf, IMO, brought it upon itself and picked a commissioner who will only accelerate things.

No it's not.

How was he supposed to expel an external threat that had unlimited funds? That made players offers they personal couldn't turn down. How do you stop that? Once the most prolific choker in major championship history found his backer to try and destroy the PGA tour I don't see how anyone could have stopped it. Just my opinion.
