Local Paper Tidbits...02/13
« on: February 13, 2025, 10:30:23 AM »
A few you may have missed over the past week if you don't read local news (in order from already happened to least likelihood of happening):

PGA National (Palm Beach Gardens): Big purchase for Henderson…and Salamander…and South Street…they’re all in together on this one.
Hillcrest (Kansas City, MO): I think most had heard by now that Tripp Davis would be reoutfitting this Donald Ross course on behalf of Links DAO…with a $30m budget…they must feel good about their Web3 holdings under the current administration. https://www.golfdigest.com/story/linksdao-hillcrest-country-club-kansas-city
Brierwood Golf Club (Shallotte, NC): Ownership is pitching a plan to reopen after eight years, repackaged as a nine-hole course with additional recreational opportunities. https://www.starnewsonline.com/story/news/local/2025/02/08/brierwood-golf-club-in-shallotte-nc-could-reopen-what-to-know/78027636007/
Sunset Hills (Pekin, IL): For sale, for about $1.5 million. A 27-hole project from the club’s founder, opened during 1964. No buzz yet on likelihood of development. https://www.pjstar.com/story/business/real-estate/2025/02/01/sunset-hills-golf-course-and-eatery-for-sale-in-pekin-illinois/77972873007/
Battle Run (Lincoln, NE): Sandhills Partners has proposed a new private club in East Lincoln. Sandhills is owned by the Peed family, better known in these circles for operating the Dormie network…and this one will be a McLay-Kidd too. The course would also serve as a home for the Huskers. https://www.newspressnow.com/news/regional_news/nebraska/sandhills-global-owners-propose-new-private-18-hole-golf-course-in-lincoln/article_54d6fbdc-a78f-5d3b-9629-94e307f3fce1.html
Cincinnati (no name): A residential development has been proposed on the far east side of town, which would incorporate a nine-hole course. The developer, it should be noted, is 18-time club champion at….Camargo. https://local12.com/news/local/proposed-development-golf-course-clermont-county-cincinnati-residential-fischer-homescondos-condominiums-robert-gerwin
Trump Indonesia: On further hold while the project itself, an ambitious 11.5-mile tourism SEZ, has been stopped up by the government on environmental grounds. Ernie Els is tabbed for the design. https://apnews.com/article/indonesia-trump-business-projects-halted-environmental-issues-d422115e5ae99d1e6f650aed05a73f38

When I went to PGA National in 2021, I was unexpectedly surprised by the entire operation. The new diner was pretty awesome, and hiring Andy Staples to do the Match (innovative) and the Staple seemed very forward-thinking for a resort I sort of always associated with old Florida. That, and I liked the new logos for the Match & Staple. Bandon Dunes effect, maybe? But either way, it seemed like it was trying to improve on itself which is cool. The Champions course is dreadful however, but alas.

LinksDAO is an interesting model. I pay pretty close attention to what their doing and with Spey Bay Hillscrest, they seem to be putting together a sneaky portfolio.

My predilection to optimism had me wondering whether Salamander might take some inspiration from the project and bring Staples in, to funnify either the short course or the nine-holer.

This one is interesting to me as it is literally right next to an existing club, Hillcrest, which has been around for quite a long time (my dad worked there as a bartender when he was in college).

There's a very large, isolated estate on this property I've seen in aerials that has a full size golf hole built as well as what appears to be a couple of additional practice greens. I've always wondered who lived there; I guess this must be the Peeds themselves.

Lincoln had a couple of private clubs close in the last 15-20 years but hasn't built much of anything lately. I'm not sure when the third nine at Firethorn was built but even since then I think it got turned into a short course.

Look for it to be more of an estate course with some university access, but perhaps more in the form of donor/booster events.
