Quote
PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan and player director Adam Scott met with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House on Tuesday in an effort to speed up the federal government's approval of the tour's deal with Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, which would be a significant step in reunifying men's professional golf.

In a statement on Thursday, Monahan, Scott and player director Tiger Woods, who was not at the White House meeting, said Trump's efforts have brought them closer to finalizing a deal with the PIF, which is prepared to invest $1.5 billion into PGA Tour Enterprises.

Maybe twenty years ago, I had someone approach me about building a seaside golf course in Israel.  I wondered if it would be a safe place for my associates to live and work, and after thinking about whom to ask, I wrote an email to Thomas Friedman, still a columnist then at the New York Times.

His response was that Israel in general was safer than it sounded over here, but to make sure that the seaside property was not in mortar range of the Gaza Strip.  Indeed, it was.

So I suspect if Gaza is to be cleared out, I know where is the valuable land to develop.

Trump might not be Monahan’s best hope to close a deal with the Saudi PIF unless he abandons his Gaza plan.

No need to fret...

 (i)  Perfunctory meetings that are ceremonial in nature (like this one) are scheduled in time slots previously blocked off for Presidential nap time.

(ii)  Yasir and Monahan were in regular contact with President Trump last year, deal was done long before the ball dropped in Times Square.

Some interesting comments in this article:   https://www.espn.com/golf/story/_/id/43721831/pga-tour-president-trump-efforts-helps-bring-pif-deal-closer

In a podcast with former New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick and journalist Jim Gray on Nov. 4, Trump said he could solve golf's great divide if he were elected president.

"I'm going to really work on other things, to be honest with you," Trump said. "You know, I think we have much bigger problems than that. But I do think, you know, we should have one tour, and they should have the best players.

"But I think it will come together. Yeah, I could certainly help it. I could probably get it done. I would say it would take me the better part of 15 minutes to get that deal done."

Tom, I played Pete Dye's course in Caesarea with the pro a couple of years ago. It was jammed. It is the only course in the country. He said that the tee sheet is always full. I felt safe, and the growing population of golfers would welcome a course along the Med.

Might want to read Eamon Lynch's sharp take on this:

https://golfweek.usatoday.com/story/sports/golf/pga/2025/02/06/lynch-publicly-flattering-donald-trump-becomes-pga-tour-lesser-evil/78310920007/?a=a&utm_source=golfweek-golflife-strada&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=golfweek_baseline_greeting&utm_term=Untitled&utm_content=golfweek-8872SM-E-NLETTER38

PS..Having visited Israel and played Caesarea, I second Tommy Williamsen's sentiment.

Years ago, on my last visit there, I was told the real reason Israel had not built other courses is the geography and prioritization of fresh water.

The majority of the non-populated land is either very arid or positioned quite close to its historically belligerent neighbors. Israel is mostly agriculturally self-reliant and directs a good deal of its desalinated water to it farms or towns and cities. Golf, by necessity, is a low-priority recreational activity there.

Might want to read Brandel Chamblee's (an American) informed take on this:

"I was happy to listen, grateful for the conversation at the end of it, and I will say that he did change my mind. He made me think about Yasir as a partner in the game of golf."

Brandel, a business partner of mine, still opposes LIV and most, if not all, it stands for. He is a staunch Republican and non-MAGA supporter of our current President. Like others, he respects the office first and defers such respect to the person occupying it. We've shared quite a few heated, yet friendly, good cigars and better bourbon over politics, history. LIV and the future of professional golf.

This clip from yesterday's Phoenix Open is being spun by social media to suggest that Brandel has changed his mind about LIV. That's not true. He accords Yassir a little more respect than initially, directly due to Trump's advocacy, yet still abhors what LIV stands for. To imply otherwise is false. He, like most all of us, recognizes that a reunification of the two tours is an inevitability and Trump's participation -- if for no other reason than to order DoJ to drop their antitrust investigation (something of no surprise to anyone who is following the first few weeks of this administration) equally inevitable. Let's not forget that LIV does look forward to booking various Trump golf properties for future event venues.

It's been announced that LIV will be shown live in the UK on ITV in 2025. I'd be very surprised if Donald Trump had anything to do with that but I'm sure he'll be delighted if LIV end up using one of his UK and Ireland courses.

There was a also a nine hole course in Israel, called Ga'ash,  from approximately 1999 to 2018. It was more bare bones than Caesarea, less expensive than Caesarea, pretty busy and located closer to Tel Aviv. I don't know why it's NLE.
