What on Earth are the criteria for inclusion?  How do Hunstanton and Southport and Ainsdale, for instance, bump Silloth and Porthcawl?

Well…it is my list and quality plays a role, but it is far from the only consideration.

I think Porthcawl is great, but it costs a bomb these days.

I won’t say S&A and Hunstanton are better than Porthcawl, but they are wonderful courses and I have a recip to play them for a reasonable fee. So, yep, I choose S&A and Hunstanton. I played S&A about 1.5 years and was highly impressed. It’s a cool course of mixed old school and modern stuff. Great walk. The location is good as well.

I am going back to Silloth in a few months. Maybe I will change my mind.

My recollection of Moray New was a rather average golf course… Moray Old on the other hand is underrated.


Get that Sean considers value but this isn’t like Gullane (where No.3 is closer to the quality of No.1 whilst being a fifth of the price).


Still, fair do’s to throw it up there to be shot down.

So your ranking would (or could) be different if you belonged to a different club with different reciprocal arrangements?  Obviously it's your list but it is less useful to others as a recommendation if it relies on reciprocals?

I've long thought that Moray New has good bones but what it needs is a bit of "featuring". Imagine if you kept the basic routing but redesigned some of the green complexes and fairway bunkering to introduce a bit more strategy/interest, as well as blootering the gorse in places, I think you could make a huge difference without doing tons of work (caveat that by saying "what do I know").

Yes, a few courses may be different, but I like all the courses plenty enough.

I like Moray New. It has enough interest for me and the price is right….for now. Yes, the Old is better and I like it, but I guess I don’t like it enough relative to the greenfee. I recall Niall being shocked by the price and that was some years ago.

As to Moray New. Despite some awkward walks I liked the course and could happily play it regularly. From the visitor perspective the very significant price differential in comparison to the Old was a surprise.
Moray/Lossiemouth also has one further golfing advantage. It’s close proximity to somewhere else on Sean’s N-50 listing, the delightful Covesea.

Sounds like a need to try Moray New again (plus I didn’t realise there was a significant price gap).


It’s over 30 years since my one play. But I have looked over at a few of the holes when playing the Old and didn’t see anything that wanted to make me play it again.

Yes, Covesea is the bigger draw in the area for me.  I really enjoy the best of these wee courses. Moray New will soon enough price itself out of my interest.

Difficult to disagree about future pricing.
Plenty of fine golf along the Moray Firth coast and inland too but what was once a pretty quiet area hasn’t half got busy over the years. Houses, industrial estates, town bypasses and traffic galore seemingly all the way along from Fochabers to Inverness, which itself seems to have hugely increased in size. The golf World has changed considerably in the last few decades and so has the World around it. Progress?

If I recall correctly the deal was £100 for the Old and £30 for the New, and that was when we were just coming out of lockdown. Its now gone to £130 and £60.

Looked it up, We paid £90 for both on separate weekend days! I am sure that was some sort of we are desperate for visitors deal because it was summer 2021.
