Sand Valley new, new course?
« on: June 04, 2024, 04:13:37 PM »
Today, GolfPass hints at another course (besides Lido, Sedge, Sand Valley, Sandbox, and Mammoth) being built at the resort. Does anyone here know anything about it? Will it be a regulation length course or a short course? Anticipated opening date?

It's called the Commons, and it's only going to be about 4000 yards long according to Michael, designed more for family play.  Jim Craig is designing it [and shaping it].  They started last year and they are pretty far along, though none of the holes had been seeded when I was there last month.

What market is this aimed at versus Sedge?  Beginning golfers?  Young kids?

I think the first answer is it is aimed at Michael's family [he has two young children], and others like them.  They are selling real estate up there and hoping to attract more families for the summer months, as a place like Crystal Downs does.

When we first talked about Sedge Valley I think Michael's idea was more along these lines, but I found a Swinley Forest length routing that I liked, and he was all in for that.

It’s right next to the Court Tennis.

Yes the Commons has been mostly grassed. There has been some indication of another regulation course being considered. They cleared trees from the land north of the resort and west of the Lido last year and there have been routings considered on the land south of the Sand Valley course. No word on a new practice facility yet but can’t imagine them hosting the US Mid Am without one.

Is that to the north of Sedge Valley? Google Maps doesn't offer much assistance. Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Actually, looks like it's west of Sedge. I see some rogue holes there.

The newly cleared land is directly west of the Lido (west of 15th Ave) and between Apache on the north and Archer on the south.

Dan,

Obviously it would be best to have a practice facility, but Quaker Ridge hosted the Walker Cup without one. They just used one of the fairways.

Cypress Point, the site of this year’s Walker Cup, doesn’t have a practice facility either. Sure, the Walker Cup doesn’t involve a large field, but Sand Valley could use the fairways on one of there courses. Again, not great, but possible.
