Ads on GCA
« on: January 03, 2025, 03:22:45 PM »
Can't say I love this look… If donations begin working again, can donating members get an ad-free experience? I don't block ads on the Internet for the most part, as I understand as a site owner myself that it's a way to make money (though the whole industry soiled itself in the last five years)… but this one didn't seem super appropriate or targeted to GCA-interested folks (I have iCloud Private Relay enabled, and this was in a business's waiting room WiFi).

That looks like ad injection on the client side. Could be a browser add-on or even the WiFi provider if you’re not using https

It appears to have started today; I didn't see any yesterday.

I'm viewing on my private home WiFi and see the ads:
Review: The Park, West Palm - Golf Club Atlas

You can minimize the ad. I now have "Intermittent Fasting for Seniors" ads popping up.  ;D
They know so much about me.  :o

Today, on an iPad on private home WiFi, I had an ad at the same place; when I left the page for other GCA pages and then came back, the ad was gone. ???

Hmm… perhaps there is a new/existing vulnerability in this version of Simple Machines Forum. I’ll look into that when I get home.

Hi all,

That was not supposed to display and is simply a byproduct of merging in Beyond The Contour with GCA as BTC had ads to help support the editorial team. The actual ads through AdSense were turned off, but it was running an experiment to help “optimize ads”, which I forgot to turn off. It shouldn't be showing ads anymore.

Apologies for the confusion!
