Dormie Houses/Club Accommodation in Scotland?

Which Scottish clubs have dormie houses or accommodation? I could only think of St Andrews New and RPGS. There must be more!

I see your point Sean. While English clubs come to mind I am not able to recall Scottish Dormie Houses. Maybe because proximity to London and abundant rail times make a quick two round overnight jaunt attractive promotes these facilities in England?

I haven't been, but I believe Loch Lomond has some rooms. Also Ardfin, Machrie, Gleneagles.  Wow it seems we have a theme here.  The most expensive or few private clubs have accommodations.

Fair point Sean. Seemingly not as prevalent as elsewhere in GB.
Can get confusing though as private members golf Clubs vrs golf resorts with onsite accommodation are not the same thing.

I can't believe I forgot about Renaissance...I have stayed there and lovely it is. I would consider Turnberry, Gleneagles etc hotels  and lodges...not quite the same thing. Same for Trump Aberdeen etc. Is the accomodation at Machrie, Loch Lomond and Ardfin separate buildings?

Golspie GC has a very nice flat for rent (sleeps 4) attached to the clubhouse. Folks renting the flat get a big break on green fees for playing the course.

Sean - Machrie is a hotel & lodges with a golf course attached.


Craigielaw has some accommodation.

I'm not sure I'd consider either Gleneagles Hotel or Turnberry Hotel a dormie house. Assuming Sean is referring to the type of Dormie House more often seen down south that was originally provided for club members to stay over and was sometimes part of the clubhouse eg. Deal (until some numpty fell down the stairs !), Royal St George's, Formby etc. then Scotland does indeed have very few of them.


St Medan's has a very nice static caravan overlooking the 1st tee, does that count ?

Sean, yes. the R&A has Waldon House for member use, right by TOC 18th fairway, and I think that e.g HCEG Muirfield has, or had, some upstairs dormy rooms for member usage, but I agree this doesn't seem as prevalent in Scotland as down south. Three of the best British dormy options proper are actually in Wales - Aberdovey, Harlech, Porthcawl all have on-site dormy facilities and offer stay-and-play deals. In the very old days both Rye and Brancaster had dormy houses entirely separate from the club complex - indeed Rye's was a couple of miles away in the town itself, and where Bernard Darwin spent some of his final years. You joined the Dormy House Club separately to the main golf club itself.

I have stayed in Rye’ s dormie house. It’s across the street from the 10th, by the pro shop.

I am very surprised by the lack of dormie houses for visitors in Scotland.

Yep, that's the new Rye one on the site of the old King William hotel.  And you can, or certainly could. use the old 9th (?) green outside the dormy to practice putting and chipping as the sun comes up, or goes down...

It would be fantastic if they could surgically remove all the later additions to the front facade and then reinstate it to what it originally was like. It really was quite a bonnie building. Of course that all presupposes a budget and a worthwhile use for the building. An extended pro shop on the ground floor with dormy house above perhaps ?

It is just as hard to get a room at the royal golf hotel as a tee time at RDGC.  I think they want to leave the accommodation part up to the local community to provide. The links house is wonderful as well.
The prime location of the old clubhouse is certainly an asset and do hope they do something for members/visitors there eventually.
