It was a good year:

1. Country Club of Virginia River Course
2. Foundry GC
3. Pinehurst #8
4. Pinehurst #4
5. Cradle
6. The Old Course
7. Kingsbarns*
8. New Course
9. Cedar Point CC (VA)
10. Cavalier G&YC (VA)
11. Boonsboro CC* (VA)
12 Myopia Hunt
13. Kittanset Club*
14. Machrihanish
15. Irvine GC*
16. Dunaverty GC
17. Shiskine*
18. West Kilbride*
19. Eden Course
20. Royal Aberdeen*
21. Cruden Bay - old
22. Crude Bay - St Olaf*
23. Elie
24. Crail Balcomie*
25. Venetian Bay (FL)
26. Kiawah Cougar Point
27. Kiawah Ocean Course
28. Rolling Green
29. U of Maryland
30. Crail Craighead
31. Cullen GC
32. Nairn*
33. Jubilee Course
34. Castle Course*
35. Castle Stuart*
36. Pinehurst #9
37. Chapel Hill CC*
38. Pawleys Plantation*
39. Willow Brook (SC)*
40. River Club (SC)*
41. Lichfield CC (SC)*
42. Sapello Hammock Creek*
43. Turnbull Bay (FL)

* New courses.

Thank you to my numerous GCA.com playing partners.

BUDA as always was a highlight. Mike Whittaker once said to me "BUDA never disappoints" and that is the truth.

I had my first hole in one after 35 years or so of playing the game. The 13th hole on the New Course. Then after 35 years, I had my second hole in one just ten days later on the 11th hole at Elie.

Returned to Rolling Green and with every playing my appreciation for the course grows.

Returned to Myopia Hunt and it's one of one.

Skiskine has been on my list and finally made it. Going to courses on Arran, Kintyre Peninsula, and Islay is as much about the journey as the golf (which is fun and quirky).

Cullen has some cool land forms that would look in place on a golf course in Sedona.

Looking forward to 2025!

Had a few trips get canceled last minute so I only managed two new courses in 2024 (how is that possible?):

Gearhart and Pronghorn - Fazio

Both are in serious contention for Best First Public/Private I Played in 2024!

Paul Jones - That is a mighty impressive lineup. Curious what you thought of the three CNY courses: Sadaquada, Teugega and Yahnundasis.

Wayne - Have you played Gulph Mills yet? If not, let me know next time you are in town.

I have a 1931 Castle Shannon Golf Club routing, Unfortunately I don’t appear to have asked anybody to post it for me at the Ed Oden routings thread. I’m struggling to reconcile it with your two images.

The original 18 routing is one of my «holy grails».

Greg,

Thanks for that additional info!

Happy to post it for you if you send to my email.

Correction: Joe Bausch posted the Castle Shannon layout for me in 2021. See Reply 1549.

Greg,

You mentioned on another thread that you were having a tough time reconciling the 1931 drawing of Castle Shannon NKA Mount Lebanon GC and I believe I know why.   I've taken the 1931 routing drawing and oriented it pointing north below;

Then, I compare it with the 1948 aerial below;

From my perspective it looks as though the artist took some liberties to fit in the Text of the course name, yardage, etc. by subtly moving what are today's (shortened) hole 5 and an adjoining long par three 1st that would have played from the southwest corner up to the practice green near the 5th tee.

It also appears as though the clubhouse was in a different spot, also further southwest than today's and likely replaced by the Elementary School.   Today's 6th hole didn't exist back then, it was created sometime in the 60s or early 70s when the clubhouse moved, and the 8th hole on the 1931 map was also discarded, except for the green.

So, I'd say the 1931 4th hole is today's #1, the 3rd is today's hole #2 (playing to original green #8), the 2nd is today's 3rd, today's 4th didn't exist until the early 60s, the 1931 9th is today's par three hole 5, truncated likely to avoid the school yard, 1931 hole #1 was abandoned except the green is still a practice green, the 1931 8th would have paralleled today's 6th corridor (in reverse) of today's 6th, lying just shortly north, 1931 holes 5 & 6 are today's holes 7 & 8, and today's 9th was extended with new tees back behind the 8th green to create a short par four to the green of the 1931 par three 7th hole.

Hope that helps!

Mike, wow and by Jove and thank you! I think my spatially challenged brain has got it, but won’t know for sure until I have printed the aerial and dusted off my protractor.

Greg,

Thanks...glad this was helpful!

I did cheat a bit using historicaerials.com which has aerial photos of Mt. Lebanon from 1947 and then every few years til 2022.   Their compare function with a slider bar is really useful to learn things like today's 2nd green actually plays to the 8th green on your 1931 map and that today's 9th green never changed position in the transition from a short par 3 to a short par 4.

Let me know any questions, thanks!

Not really a vintage year for discovery. Away plays were
(new to me) Seacroft, Prestatyn
(revisited) Thetford, The Sacred Nine, Brancaster, Goswick
Member plays were
Harlech, Huntercombe, Porthcawl, St Andrews (various) and both of the Gog Magog courses

Really enjoyed most of Seacroft and the back nine at Prestatyn: Goswick was as primally pleasing (and tough) as ever, and I remain very glad to have persuaded Ran to visit there for a course profile...
