How can anyone pass up the chance to play a six time host of the open championship for about 15 quid?????

No Jack and I as of now. Anyone considering please go!!  It’s a great bunch of golfers and a chance to find a course or two you otherwise wouldn’t experience.
You prefer something mountainous?
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

Would be better off staying 2 weeks after BUDA, or arriving a week prior, and staying a week after? Or, does it not really matter that time of year?
Best Played So Far This Season:
Crystal Downs CC (MI), The Bridge (NY), Canterbury GC (OH), Lakota Links (CO), Montauk Downs (NY), Sedge Valley (WI)

It really doesn't matter.  There's a chance that the week before will be a bit busier at the very end of the English school holidays, though the Scottish schools go back in mid August.

If you’re hoping to play the Old Course you should be aware that it’s closed for 2 weeks from 8th September for the R&A Autumn Meeting, so you might be better the week before. Have a look at the “busy dates” section on the links website.

My plan is to arrive on September 2nd and head straight to St. Andrews and try my luck as single in the daily ballot for 4-5 days before heading down to Gullane on the Sunday prior to BUDA. If I get shut out from playing TOC (and I will expect to be shut out so I am not disappointed; can you tell I served in the Army?) I'd like to play Eden and the New, Leven Links, Anstruther, and Crail.

There are some courses near Dundee and North of Dundee I would like drive North to play as well; Lundin Links, Panmure, Montrose Links, Monifieth, Kinghorn and Abendour.

Of course, I still need to see if all of these courses even allow public play....

I'll stay in North Berwick from the 10th to the 19th and play as much as I can in East Lothian. I would feel blessed if I could play N. Berwick, Longiddry, Goswick, Dunbar, Glen, Elie, Kilspindie, Winterfield, Eyemouth and Bamberg Castle.

I may even squeeze in a round around Edinburgh right before leaving; Braid Hills, Morton Hall, Royal Burgess, Merchants, and a few others.

Man, I am greedy!

I just cancelled a 10 day golf trip to Phoenix in April so I can spend more time in Scotland. I have yet to tell the wife that I'll be gone for at least 18-21 days. She never stipulated how long I could be away.  I'll seek forgiveness later.

I'll probably fly back out on the 20th.

To help whittle the choices down I suggest dropping Anstruther, Eyemouth and Winterfield. I would definitely add Musselburgh Old.

Of the courses you mention near Dundee, Lundin, Aberdour and Kinghorn are actually all in the opposite direction from St Andrews. Actually you could comfortably play all of those you mention while staying in SA; Montrose is the farthest away and then it’s less than an hour and a half; Lundin, Monifieth and Panmure are all within 45 minutes.

Elie should also be on your St Andrews list rather than East Lothian and, in my opinion, should be at the top of that list outside TOC. It really is not to be missed.

I’m gutted not to be able to make it to BUDA (again - mid-September is never a good time for me) but I will be in St Andrews the week before and for at least a few days after. If you, or any other Pests, would like some company for a round or even just a drink in the St Andrews GC clubhouse, let me know.
