...I don’t like tight run off areas on too many holes.

At my course in NY everyone just uses a putter.

Was practicing today hitting three balls to the same pin using a different club for each ball.

What conclusions did you take away from the 3-ball practice session?

The club I’m at in Naples has a great practice facility. 4 short game areas and the putting green. I asked Jeff Warne what to focus on as I was retiring and had plenty of time on my hands. He said something to the effect of, work on hitting shots with different clubs to develop creativity. Best short game advice I’ve ever gotten. It’s all about creativity.

Mike DeVries’ Diamond Springs in Hamilton Michigan uses one height of turf for fairways and rough.  I though I read that it was to cut down on maintenance for maintains grass and required less irrigation.

Within the next ten years or so most grass cutting on golf courses will be done by robots working 24/7.

On bigger properties it makes sense to cut at one height right up to native areas. On smaller tree lined parklands there is often little or no native area as such - just patches of rough under the trees. Keeping this cut at all - never mind at fairway height - is a time consuming and expensive exercise currently.

Robots will change all that!

I concur. Robots are here and here to stay. They will drop in price year over year as adoption becomes widespread. The homeowner lines cost about the same as a good push mower. Wasn't the case just 2-3 yrs ago

I went to the CME Championship at Tiburon today. I've previously played the course 3 or 4 times. There are two heights of turf on the entire course. Greens and everything else. I started thinking about other courses I've played like that and the only other one I could remember was Streamsong Blue. Why do this? Are there advantages?

That's kinda the case...Florida courses like Tiburon may not have another cut of rough per se. Instead, if you miss a fairway, you are in yet another interminable "waste area", or water hazard, or palmetto bush.

Even AGNC has 3 cuts: Green, Fairway and then the "first cut".
I just dont see how you get to only two.

What...?...is there fairway on the entire course except on the greens?

The continuation of pursuing lower cutting heights on fairways has created a disconnect when trying to implement this two height system. If the maintenance meld appropriately considers the two height system, it can be a great presentation with great playing characteristics, all at a lower expense.

Wasn't ANGC's second cut only introduced in the 2000s? I think there's a hunger to see it reverted to that setup. It's probably one of the most appealing specific possible outcomes from the future golf ball rollback.
