A week at the Tryall Club in Jamaica was probably the best week of my life. Andrew Green did some work there recently so it's probably one of the more polished courses in the area. Has to be one of the more architecturally significant golf courses with it's own private beach. I'm not even going to try to post a picture here but google "seve ballesteros nick faldo tryall club" and you'll get a good sense of the vibe there.
Many years ago, Ran Morrissett reached out to me after visiting Tryall and being greatly impressed with the course. He learned that it was designed by Texan Ralph Plummer, and knowing that I've played most courses of consequence in the state, he asked me to write an opinion piece covering the architect's approach to golf course design. The deal was that he would then add a detailed analysis of the course as only he can do, proof the document, and upload the completed piece in the "In My Opinion" section. To my horror (it has mistakes that I can't directly correct), he just "published" it "as is" and, despite my attempts to shame him privately, he has not fulfilled his side of the bargain (the man was quite busy then and probably even more so today).
Anyways, I've not played Tryall. My wife and I are looking for a winter get-away, a week or two, and perhaps this might be a good spot. I spent a week at Casa de Campo- 5 rounds of "the Teeth...", 1 each on the other two, and had a great time despite being thrown of a horse on our second day and only able to make half swings the rest of our time there. I'm told by a good golfer that Punta Cana has some commendable courses and a variety of things to do on and off the beach. I'm gratefully open for suggestions.
