OT - The Wimbledon Park Golf Club, R.I.P.
« on: October 11, 2024, 08:45:41 PM »
Having paid off the members of the WPGC with a rather hefty sum for the club to give up its lease to the property, the All-England Lawn Tennis Club (aka "Wimbledon") is planning to build 38 courts, an 8,000 seat stadium and a public park on the former grounds of the course.

All contingent of course on getting planning approval.

That's old news - each member including Piers Morgan is rumoured to have gained £65,000 each from the sale.

It recently got planning approval by the Deputy Mayor of London

All the tennis major venues have been transformed a lot in the 21st Century - all main courts and no 1 courts now have a sliding roof which was at the Australian Open first and Roland Garros last. It shows how much incredible income these event have now.

Wimbledon is pushing on further to have additional courts so that they also have the pre-qualifying event there rather than at Roehampton. Wimbledon Park apparently was not of high significant architectural interest golf course design wise.

Ben -

Have you seen any articles about what the various Wimbledon Park GC members did with their big payoff? It would be interesting to know what other clubs they joined or what cars they bought with the money. :)

My friend David Langheim MG was course manager of Wimbledon Park for many years.

It was fun to look at the course on the walk from the train to Wimbledon.

Mike -

I made that walk a week before the tournament started this past June. We visited the excellent tennis museum there. It was the first time back since I had been there to see the tournament in 1977. The grounds of the AELTC have changed A LOT.

I can tell that The All-England has changed. I haven’t been to Wimbledon in over 10 years. Used to go when I had business in London. Even if you are not a tennis person, it is a memorable experience.

It looks like the area has a lot of golf courses.  When I brought it up on Google Maps I had trouble finding Wimbledon Park as there appear to be five courses a bit north and west of AELTCC - Royal Wimbledon, Richmond Park, Coombe Hill, Malden and Combe Wood.

Don't forget the two clubs that share the course on Wimbledon Common, to the west of the AELTC.
