Best golf roadtrip on one highway?
« on: October 02, 2024, 03:48:58 AM »
Just a fun thought experiment. You pick one highway for a golf road trip. I could be an interstate, route, or a motorway if you prefer tea. You can deviate a bit, but not significantly... e.g. I-80, I-70 can all go to Ballyneal, but only I-80 can go to Sand Hills (not I-90). To make it reasonably fair on length, let's say you max out on 14 courses (a two week road trip), and only one course per metro.

To start, I'll pitch the humble California State Route 1:

Choice in Orange County and LA, Jerry Perenchio's 3-hole, Rustic Canyon, Soule Park, Montecito, Morro Bay, choice in Monterey, Pasatiempo, choice in SF, Meadow Club, Northwood, Sea Ranch.

Garden State Parkway-NJ

Hackensack GC-Oradell
Ridgewood CC-Paramus
Montclair GC-West Orange
Glen Ridge CC-Glen Ridge
Shackamaxon GC-Scotch Plains
Plainfield CC-Edison
Hollywood CC-Deal
Suneagles GC-Eatontown
Spring Lake GC-Spring Lake
Manasquan River GC-Brielle
Seaview Golf Resort-Galloway
Atlantic City CC-Northfield
Hidden Creek-Egg Harbor
Union National League-Cape May

This trip will take you from the top of the parkway by the New York border all the way to the bottom in Cape May covering roughly 160 miles. I maxed out at 14 per the guidelines but there are many more that could be added.

US 1 in NC beginning at Sanford with Tobacco Rd, then down thru the Pinehurst area.

Hey Tim , como esta?

Great call on the Parkway , which by the way is a pretty nice road that ends here in my beloved Cape May County!

Just to bolster that great list of yours don't forget Galloway National , less than five minutes from the Parkway interchange

David,
The A9 runs from Falkirk, so you could easily add Falkirk, Stirling, Bridge of Allan, Dunblane, Gleneagles, Auchterarder, Perth, Dunkeld Courses to the list! Think you missed Spey Valley too.

Archie-Lots of good ones around Atlantic City including Galloway, Twisted Dune and Greate Bay. In North Jersey the town of West Orange is loaded as besides Montclair GC (36 holes) you also have Rock Spring, Essex County, Francis Byrne and Crestmont. I used only one course per town but there were no shortage of options.

I was going to say Route 27 on LI, but then you said only one course per metro and it's all basically the same metro area.

So how about I-95? From Seminole to Pine Valley to Winged Foot. TPC Sawgrass, Merion, Baltusrol, could probably swing the west end of Long Island too, so Garden City, the Creek, Piping Rock as well. The route 27 ones are a bit of a stretch though. Then throw in CC of Fairfield, Yale, Misquamicut, up to Brookline, don't know about anything further north.

I think we had an old thread on Route 1 on East coast of USA. I believe Seminole is one. My Rolling Green is one. I think in some areas I -95 substitutes for Route 1.

I'll throw in a vote for I90.  If you drive all the way across the US, you're bound to hit something. Starting in the west outside Seattle you can begin with:
  • Tumble Creek
  • Then onto Rock Creek
  • A long dark stretch as you drive to Chicago...
  • Chicago Golf Club
  • The Warren Course at Notre Dame
  • Inverness in Toledo
  • Your favorite Cleveland course (Pepper Pike, Country Club, Canterbury)
  • Kahkwa in Erie
  • Buffalo CC
  • Oak Hill in Rochester
  • A stretch, but Taconic in western Mass
  • Finishing in Boston with Brookline

Why nothing comes close to the A198!
12 courses in 9.5miles. 8 or 9 of them, GCA favourites.

Does that by any chance go east from Edinburgh?

I’ll put Route 27 on Long Island, NY from the Nassau County line out to Montauk against any one hundred mile stretch on the planet. I’m not going to list them because those in the know are aware of what’s there.

If we limit it to just one 17 mile drive road, I can think of one that perhaps is unmatched as well.  ;)

Tony,

That is not a road trip. It is a staycation. Unfortunately my wife still won't move from the States to North Berwick.

Route 1 is a great call. It goes inland enough to pick up Augusta, Aiken, the NC Sandhills plus the ones along 95 where they run close to each other.

Great call A.G.
You have all the notables and some pretty good locals without much driving from US1.

As an East Coast boy, it's gotta be US 1, although I-75 is not too shabby:

The Loop
Oakland Hills and Detroit
Inverness
Camargo
Holston Hills
Lookout Mountain or The Honors Course
East Lake
Tampa
SE Florida

US-101 is not quite as good in California as Highway 1, but it does continue to Bandon.

I think if you require driving off the road into the club’s entrance US 1 is tough to beat.

Read BLUE FAIRWAYS, by Charlie Stack.  He golfs along the full stretch of US Highway 1.
