My girlfriend’s daughter lives in Spruce Pine (you might have seen stories about it as it is source of the purest quartz for semiconductor production ). They had over 24 inches of rain.  The devastation up there is incredible. Fortunately the damage to her house was limited to one tree crushed the balcony and minor roof damage. They’ve been able to get generators to get some electricity for the house and their well.  They’ve heard it may be a month or more to get electricity back up.

The quarries up there also produce the white quartz “sand” used in the bunkers at Augusta and many other courses.

My father-in-law lived for some years at Little Switzerland just above Spruce Pine. Did not seem like a potential flood area.

I understand Mountain Park of the Cliffs group was damaged .

We're getting a little off topic, but what the heck.  The Spruce Pine quartz mines, one in particular, are the source of the quartz used to make the quartz crucibles in which the chips are made. I used to think their quartz was used in the chips themselves, which is not so, but without the crucibles, no chips, and this is the major source world-wide.  The "sand" is made from waste quartz I'd assume.  I'd like to get up there from Charlotte in a week or so to check my second home at the Mt. Mitchell Golf Course, but as of now the shortest route is dead (bridge damage of some sort) until next year, and the next best route, through Spruce Pine, appears to be closed too.

Folks in the areas affected by Helene should be aware of the newly formed tropical storm (and soon-to-be hurricane) Milton: https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/graphics_at4+shtml/150217.shtml?cone#contents

Yup, I was planning on starting my drive to Naples/Marco area on Tuesday morning. Looks like that plan is changing. If this continues on the path shown I'm going to be in the middle of another one.

It’s simply brutal. A temperature reading of the water in the Gulf yesterday revealed it was 91 degrees.

We’re bracing for another catastrophe.

It looks like this storm will cross Florida from West to East and then go back over the Atlantic.  Hopefully it stays away from the areas that got whacked by Helene.

The Furman University course, which is not too far south of Mountain Park, is still closed and will probably remain closed through next week as over 150 trees were downed. Current reports are at least 50 trees are still blocking playing corridors. The club is having difficulty securing crews to clear the trees with everyone committed to more “important” locations.

The amount of cleanup required across Upstate SC and Western NC is mind boggling. 😢

Current forecasts are saying it'll basically be a direct hit on Tampa Wednesday night as a 3 or 4.

P.S.  As I understand it, the previous one only sideswiped Tampa with little issue.

I guess one man’s sideswipe is another man’s t-bone.

I’m approximately 200 miles south of where Helene made landfall. The loss here is devastating. Last week I volunteered to help a couple clean up their place on Siesta Key, about 4 miles south of me. They are 82 and have lived in their home for 40 years. The first floor was 5 feet under water and they lost everything. They were, literally, in shock as well as grieving. We filled up 3 30 foot dumpsters in 2 days with furniture, clothes, rugs, wedding pictures, drawings from grandchildren, memories. And we didn’t make a dent. They are simply going to walk away from their home, sell “as is” and look for a new home as theirs is not salvageable. They’re starting over at 82 years old.

They’re not alone.

Well I’ll mention that to my buddy in St Pete who had two feet of water in his house. Have you seem pictures of Clearwater? Dunedin? All in the Tampa area.

And let’s worry about damage to golf courses……when Irma hit I flew down to my place a week or so after. I’m walking around my coach home picking up blue styrofoam and carrying it around to the front where it would eventually get picked up by the garage collectors. Someone was walking down the road and I asked them where all styrofoam came from. He says that’s the insulated paneling from someone’s mobile home.

Not looking forward to my drive down. Milton is going to hit the whole state of Florida the way it’s shaping up. How do you evacuate a state?

I think it’s important to remember that any location within the NHC prediction bubble is a possibility for direct impact. The center line is the most likely path, but ‘probably’ isn’t a great rule to follow when talking about a potential Cat 4 hurricane.

In this case, anything south of landfall is likely to be very strongly affected as well. Potential back-to-back impacts is extremely scary.

Over 180 dead and over $200 billion in damage, most of which is not insured.

Yes, Cliffs at Mountain Park is closed.  Just about every hole had flooding.  They are working hard to get it back in playing shape, but I haven’t heard a date mentioned for it to be re-opened.  Even some of the many raised green complexes suffered.

With the storm track forecast we should be glad that Streamsong doesn't have many trees.

The area that may get hit worse is around Cabot Citrus.  Right now the projected rainfall for that area is 12-16".
