In my opinion Hogan is arguably the GOAT, edging out Bob Jones.  Purportedly he would not aim at pins for fear his ball might be deflected farther from the hole.  Also he would cut the ball to take a few yards off or draw the ball to add a few yards.  Genius.

You’ve no doubt heard the story that after making a 2 on a par 3 Hogan took the honor on the next hole only to be told that his partner made an ace. Focused. But in a good way?

It was announced that the course was playing over 7,000 yards for that match. That was a long way in 1965.

Particularly in the context of Hogan’s distance chart:  5-iron 155 yards.  Maximum 180 yards and minimum 145 yards..

I think it's right they paid Hogan $25,000 to play - which considering we're still watching it was Shell money well spent.
Which was the same as first place in the US Open the same year.

Course played extra long because of the monsoon they got during filming, believe the match was filmed over a few days.

When I was a kid, courses like Houston CC were highly regarded. After watching the match, I can't for the life of me, figure out why.

Tommy--  Played it 1x about 5-7 years ago and would probably give it a 6 on the Doak scale.  But me thinks what you see on this film is highly a function of the quality of video 70 years ago (compared with today).
