Re: Fairway bunkers positions on Open courses
« Reply #25 on: July 29, 2024, 01:32:37 PM »
As a generalisation bunkers on links courses tend to be on the small side. Not always admittedly but generally.
One result of this is the increased likelihood of an evil, nasty, downright awkward stance or lie.
Hence my #1 suggestion for links golf … don’t go in a fairway bunker. Ever! Avoid them at all costs. Don’t take them on. Don’t get greedy. Don’t play close to them. Ensure lay-ups really are lay-ups. Greenside bunkers? Well there’s a chance of recovery or even the possibility of an up-n-down from a greenside bunker, but fairway bunkers, well they are usually an opportunity to rack up a big score. Don’t go near them!
Over the years there have been a fair few Open losses caused by fairway bunkers.
