Was fortunate to get to play Medinah #3 a couple days ago. Was unfortunate that it was by far the hottest day of the year in Chicago, but most of us survived.
I never had the pleasure of playing the most recent version, but this new version is extremely fun, and compared to how the old version came across on television, I think it's going to be much more interesting and enjoyable for the members. A great deal of variety. I think I hit 9 greens and did so with 7 different clubs, and that was from the 6,500 yard tees. Green surrounds provide a lot of options for recovery, and I think I ended up putting on those shots more often than not. The fence holes, especially 5 and 6, were great both visually and strategically. We had a left pin on 6 (we had a lot of really tough pins), and with that flag it's not a hazard you can easily ignore. If you play away from it off the tee, you're going to deal with it on the approach.
OCM were on-site for a Q&A and discussion post round, and couldn't have been nicer or more accomodating, and that goes for the staff as well. Ryan and the rest of the membership should be very pleased with the finished work. The old version didn't look like a course I'd want to play every day. I think this looks like a major improvement. It stands to be seen whether it will test the best in stroke play, but the old version had already shown that it no longer could, and I think this place will be super fun for match play.
