Public Golf in Jacksonville Area
« on: May 16, 2024, 12:02:43 AM »
Hi all,

I may be in Jacksonville for a couple nights in January. Would appreciate any public golf suggestions in the area, outside of the obvious (TPC Sawgrass). Does not have to be high-end, but would love to play somewhere interesting. Could not find this covered using the search function.

Thanks!

Ian

Jacksonville Beach Golf Club.

Constantly blamed by 8-handicaps for their 7 missed 12-footers each round.

Thank you for changing the font of your posts. It makes them easier to scroll past.

Hyde Park. originally designed by Donald Ross, I think there’s a thread here in GCA that says that Dick Wilson was also involved

Mike,

Thanks for posting. I’m not planning to be in Jacksonville, but the membership deals offered by this public course anre interesting. The “Adult Walking” deal seems quite reasonable for retired people looking to walk and play a few times per week. The course doesn’t look bad either.

Hyde Park is a diamond in the rough. If you can look past the conditions and neighborhood, the course has good bones. There's some debate as to whether it was designed by Donald Ross or Stanley Thompson.

The Yards was a nondescript real estate course inside the gates of TPC Sawgrass that sold some land a few years ago and they redid 9 holes and turned the rest into a handful of sporty short holes. I wouldn't go out of my way as an out of town visitor.

Jacksonville Beach is a fun muni a few blocks from the ocean. It's a busy place popular with locals and was re-done several years ago. One of the better public options.

South of Jacksonville a half hour or so are King & Bear at World Golf Village and St Johns Golf & Country Club. 30-45 minutes north of Jacksonville is North Hampton (Palmer) and Amelia National (Fazio - private, but probably accessible with a phone call).

A bit south of there but Hammock Beach courses are pretty good.

A little out of town, but a rock-solid public offering. Great value, and an excellent logo! I believe it's the North and West 9s that are original, and they're a very enjoyable 18. The South 9 is tighter and I don't like it quite as much, but it's certainly not bad.

I wonder why so many pros play the Yards? My son met Cam Smith there. Adam Scott has played as well. Smith plays in the skins game.

I enjoyed Bobby Weed's Stillwater when I was down there last year. It's a housing development course but was brand new so there weren't really many/any houses yet. The experience will surely be different once all the homes go in, but I've no idea how long that will take.

A second on that sentiment.  Was there 6 months ago and enjoyed it...
