Just saw a playful 1919 article that refers to the “Chicago Big Four” in golf course architecture, as well as the British “Big Two”.

It names the British two but not the Chicago four.

Obvious to all?

(EDIT - this is firms, not necessarily individuals)

Good question.  I don't know but I would think the following:
Sure - Chicago Golf Club
Pretty Sure - Onwentsia GC, Skokie GC

Others?    I don't think Shoreacres was done by then.Maybe Midlothian or Exmoor?

In 1919, Old Elm is a certainty in Chicago.

Folks,

Not golf courses. Architecture firms.

In UK, presumably Colt/MacKenzie and Fowler/Simpson. No real idea about the US but presumably Donald Ross would be one and then CBM and various associates might be another ?

“One might almost say nowadays the business of golfing architecture is, like that of meat packing, in the hands of mighty trusts. Chicago has its ‘big four’ - we have our big two. Mr. Harry Colt, Dr. MacKenzie and Mr. Hugh Alison are one amalgamation; Mr. Herbert Fowler and Mr. Tom Simpson are another.”

It occurs to me re-reading this that the writer is actually referring to the big four meat packing businesses in Chicago, thus rendering this thread a complete non-event. Please move on!
