Royal Dornoch, by a hair over Royal County Down - although I'd like to see Royal St. George's before I make that official. Honorable mention to Royal Porthcawl, which I love but probably isn't quite as good.

How about least favorite Royal course, as a separate thread? Royal Burgess probably wins my vote...

 Actually i have played 3--County Down,Portrush,Dublin.RCD is #1.It  is just my Irish heritage that prompted the first response.

Oops - I knew that about Muirfield.
I got caught up in the long Hon. Co. of Ed. golfers name.

I do know how the Royal designation is bestowed(hate to use these words being a Yank, but...)

Still, I'm surprised about TOC - I thought the Royal & Ancient name was derived from that designation.

Exactly how many courses throughout the world have an authentic Royal designation? Here in Canada, Royal Colwood in Victoria, BC and Royal Montreal immediately come to mind.

I'm sure there are more than a few unauthentic Royal designations out there as well, like the wee little 'farmer' course near my home called Royal Estate  ::)

The Old Course at St. Andrews has, from time immemorial been 'owned' by the townspeople. An Act of Parliament a couple of decades ago placed the ownership and control to the Links Trust. The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews has certain privileges there, but do not own a course they can call their own.

I would rate the Royal courses I have played as follows:

A+:  Royal County Down, Royal Dornoch

A:  Royal Birkedale, Royal Portrush, Royal Aberdeen

A-:  Royal Liverpool (Hoylake), Royal Lytham & St. Annes

B+:  Royal Dublin

Question - Has anyone out there ever played Duff House Royal or Royal Tarlair in Aberdeenshire/Grampian? These are probably the two least known Royal courses. Duff House Royal was designed by Alastair Mackenzie.

Of the two Royals I've played that I can think of, I'd give Royal New Kent (Virginia, U.S.) the edge over Port Royal in Bermuda.

Haven't actually played Kansas City CC.  I hope at least a few people (Americans) picked up on the reference.   ::)
