OT - Anyone bump into this guy in 2023?
« on: February 17, 2024, 03:50:00 PM »
This guy broke the world record for number of golf courses played in a Calendar year at 580.  Started in California on Jan. 3, last course a year later on Jan 2, was Chambers Bay.

https://www.pga.com/story/a-journey-inside-patrick-koenigs-world-record-breaking-golf-rv-tour

A list of courses played is here with some high profile notables in New York, Nebraska, Oregon, etc.

Anyone happen to run into him?

I played Rolling Green with him years ago along with Sean Ogle of Breaking Eighty. When I saw he was playing down the street on his adventure I invited him back.

Patrick has a great joy for the game.

To clarify the record I believe it was for the number of DIFFERENT courses in 365 days. So playing 36 at one course only counted as one. He also had to play full scale courses not executive courses.

He played my club in the Bay Area late in the tour, and by all accounts was a good guy.

I heard an interview with him and he was talking about a particularly bad weather day when courses were closed he managed to persuade somewhere to let him play and he said he zipped around in a cart! I was rather shocked to hear that.

Yeah, met him at The Fields club in April of last year.

Helped him park his RV.

Seemed like another golf influencer media person.

Good for him breaking the record.

Wow that is something that is earned, not given.  Maybe there is some site or blog he has, but would love to know, number of rounds walked vs. rode, times carried vs. caddy, public vs. private #'s, paid vs. comp, # of golf balls.
Also what was his score for each.  I can't imagine a month like that playing almost 36 a day, then driving an RV in places like So Cal???  No thanks.

This must be the Maginot Line between social media users and non-users.

If you are a social media user, you know Patrick Koenig. You've known about him for a few years.

Guys like Jon and Drew (both orig. from around the treehouse) do very good work on the SMs, and you don't have to do anything beyond lurk (which many do around GCA) to benefit from their research and production.

I played with Patrick at the Old Head when he was in Ireland a few years back, it was a fun round, he's great company on the course and he is a great follow on social media.

No, but it's a tad depressing to find a player who has played more different courses in one year than you did in a lifetime.

No, but I follow this guy on GolfWRX.com. He has been golfing 6-7 days a week while traveling all over in his RV. He post pics of everywhere he plays.

Here is a link to the thread, it's over 200 pages now!

I've played and traveled with Patrick a bunch over the years, and quite simply you won't find a more obsessed golfer in the world.

The attention he's getting for his quest this year is so deserved. It's easy to look at it on the surface and say "wow, that's impressive."

But when you think about everything that actually goes into it: logistics of lining up rounds, figuring out where to park a massive RV during said rounds, travel, actually golfing nearly 36 holes every day for a year, plus sharing it all on social media? It's one of the most impressive undertakings I can imagine. And the fact that a year later he's still as excited about it as he was when he first started? It makes it that much better. His enthusiasm for the game is contagious.

I still look back fondly on that round at Rolling Green, Mike! Looking forward to getting back and seeing all of the renovation work sometime soon. Even before it was one of the most underrated courses I've played - can't imagine how good it is now.

Good to see you around these parts Sean! Patrick, Sean, and myself met playing Riv a number of years back.

I've also played a few rounds with Patrick at Rustic Canyon over the years including his first version of the RGV Tour. Congrats to Patrick on a mind boggling amount of golf to play in a year.

I played with him three times and set him up at two other places.

He's a good guy, the life of a party.  He's also a good player (2 handicap) and raised quite a bit of money for the First Tee of Seattle.

I can't imagine anyone else trying to do it with the time, money, and access constraints. Yowsa it makes me tired just thinking about it.

Sorry, but I can’t imagine lying on my death bed wishing I’d played one more course. I love golf travel as much as anyone, but really… committing your ENTIRE life to it? It’s a bit sad when you think about it.
