When you know you are screwed #2: Pacific Dunes 13th
« on: December 04, 2003, 03:40:57 PM »
Taking off on NAF's theme, here I am after a balloon-cut 3-iron into the 13th at Pacific Dunes. The wind was hard into-left-to-right, and I got a little ahead of it. ;)

You can see my tracks in the sand as I struggled up the hill to get to the ball. Got lucky, though; found a somewhat flat area up there and got it up-and-down. ;D

Just don't ask me what I shot that day. >:(

YAHOOOO!

I've had that exact shot - nearly the exact same damn place.  My "cut" ended up there as well...

That is freakin' incredible that you got it up and down.  I had a hard enough time taking a stance, let alone hitting the ball.

But come to think of it, from the pic it looks like you found a flat part... yep, you seem to be higher up than I was.  My damn ball plugged about 5 feet below where you are -in front of that rock, such that the next shot was nearly over my head.

That's such a wonderful hole--but I can't resist saying it again--if they'd only add about 20 steps to the back of that green it would be awesome. That area back there is just made for greenspace that would create intense approaching, pitching, chipping or putting back to!

ChrisB,

I always thought that area was off limits, that trespassing was forbidden due to the sensative nature of the dunes.
Where did you hit your next shot that allowed you to up and down it ?  Did you hole out a chip ?  ;D

TEPaul,

There might be a danger factor associated with extending the green further back.

I walked back there, thought the same way you did, but also felt that some careless golfer plumb bobbing his putt, just might back up off the cliff.

Chris B. I rename you Lawrence of Pacific Dunes, is that a golf club you have, or a fishing rod? ;D

Tom H,
Yes, my balloon cut apparently goes farther right than your balloon cut. ;) Especially that day. Actually that little ledge was one of the few places where you could hit a recovery, especially if the ball would tend to plug like yours did (brutal!). I guess you just have to miss it big enough!

Patrick,
The area left of the 13th down to the beach is inaccessible, and there is a sign there saying so, but the right-hand dunes are fair game as far as we knew.

Where did you hit your next shot that allowed you to up and down it ?  Did you hole out a chip ?  ;D

That same stiff wind that carried my shot way up the dune was dead into me on the next shot; that combined with the height above the green allowed me to swing hard and have it stop quick, about 7-8 feet away from the right-center pin.

One of the few highlights of that round, though. As you know, with that wind you just try to get to the 14th tee without any major damage, then have a fast finish, but I was skying by this point!

THESE are the pictures I want to see more of.  dont' give me these shots of yourself in the middle of the fairway on the most famous holes in golf (yeah, that's YOU Carlyle!).

That's not me.  That's my stunt double: Nick Faldo.

What's it like when you miss a fairway?
