Feel Good Story - North Park GC in Pittsburgh
« on: January 09, 2024, 07:57:26 AM »
Reading about Metacomet being sadly turned into dense housing recently, I was pleased to see the opposite approach taken to long time Municipal course North Park near Pittsburgh.

Ooops...read it too quickly.   It's not "The" North Park Muni outside Pittsburgh ..it's a driving range and par three course near there.   Still, a nice story.

It's a feel good story, but it dodges the long-term housing problems we've created in our cities. Unfortunately, the video showcases some of the extremely cliche, myopic reactions that miss the scope of the problem, e.g., parking concerns and loss of neighborhood feel.

I've written about this if anyone is interested in my overly verbose thoughts on the subject: Why I Am Still Concerned About Municipal Courses During this Golf Boom. The housing crisis is accelerating in American cities, and if we're not willing to upzone our neighborhoods, we'll likely lose many of our municipal and public golf courses. At a 20 minute drive to downtown Pittsburgh, North Park seems to fit into this suburban density model almost exactly.
