"For a championship course today would mean a distance between 6500 and 7000 yards, and not five golfers in a thousand want that kind of course for everyday play."

Does this still apply?  I wish??  If made current what would be the number in a thousand?  Is the additonal 200 yards to 300 yards of grass truly being utilized in the design process?  Or are designs just allowing the driver to be used off the tee instead of the brain??  With all that extra land cost you think more could be spent on the design features???  Seeing how many in a thousand can really play those tees.

I don't think a 7000 yard course even appeared until the 80's. I'll go with Pete Dye.

I don't think there are 5 golfers in a thousand today who would or could handle 7,000 yards for everyday play.

I agree.

I golf with a group of low handicap golfers.
When we play a new course at home or on vacation, we usually play the back tees, with the exceptions that if the four shot hole is over 440 yards, we move up to the next tee and if the three shot hole is over 200 yards, we move up.
What this accomplishes is we end up playing an average length of 6600 yards.
I am sure this group is in the top 2% of golfers, and we all feel the most comfortable with that yardage.
