GCAofTD - #11 - Charles Maud
« on: September 07, 2012, 03:09:41 PM »
Turning our attention to the West Coast, it would be hard to overlook Charles Maud's influence on the development of golf in California.  Maud was the first president of the SCGA and won the first California Amateur in 1899.

Maud, an Englishman by birth, may very well be responsible for bringing golf to California.  Unfortunately, it is hard to track down much information on him other than the fact that he was a polo enthusiast as well as a golfer.  A search of this site reveals more results for the word "maudlin" than it does Charles Maud.

Course List:

Riverside (1892) (9) (CA)
Old Del Monte (1900) (9) (CA)
Victoria (1903) (9) (CA) - Photo tour:  http://www.golfclubatlas.com/forum/index.php/topic,31039.0.html
Delmar (Unk.) (9) (NLE) (CA)

I played Del Monte this past week and in researching the design evolution came across the fact that another common spelling of his last name in news reports was "Maude".   Also, his middle name abbreviation was "E", for search engines that require exact precision.

It also seems the first course at Del Monte (opened in 1897) was designed by early SFGC (at Presidio) pro William Robertson, from Scotland, not Maud/Maude, although it's likely he contributed to the course's early evolution.
