Ward,
I accidentally found an article last year, and Sven immediately directed me to the map Wendell Miller and Leonard Macomber did with Donald Ross’s name on it. I have spent a great deal of time researching old papers and as near as I can tell, Donald Ross visited the property in 1917 while he was building the French Lick course. I believe that the club was trying to obtain additional property to expand from 9 to 18 holes. Two articles mention this Ross visit. The story then dies until 1922 when it is revealed the club was able to obtain the “Knapp property” and planned on expanding. I found another article speaking to the expansion of the course that referred to Macomber (I think his name is spelled wrong.) Macomber and Miller built a couple courses in Wisconsin together. Miller of course worked at Augusta National and OSU with Alister MacKenzie. There is a similar looking map to the one Sven originally posted here that is dated 1924. I suspect that might be the time frame for the map.
The map itself is basically the ECC that existed until last year with the changes Gary and Ron Kern did, I spoke to Ron Kern about the whole thing last spring. he said his dad felt Bill Diddel did the course, but strangely I have been unable to tie Diddel to the course despite his Fendrich and Rolling Hills work.
Anyway I suspect that Ross did the routing in 1917 and that Miller and Macomber did the work 5 years later. I have nothing that I can prove, but that is what I know. It would explain your description of the golf course which I tend to agree with. I did love that old course. RIP.
