New Doak course in Spain
« on: August 21, 2023, 07:01:27 AM »
As reported by GCA magazine:

https://www.golfcoursearchitecture.net/content/tom-doak-appointed-for-project-on-valderrama-ii-site-in-southern-spain

The article says the first course could debut in 2024, which seems quite soon, especially given the amount of new projects Tom and team have on the go. That said, exciting times.

I’d argue that it’s not really that exciting with the development group aiming to make it “one of continental Europe’s most exclusive clubs”.

I wish we were moving away from that model rather than further towards it with every new golf course.

There seems to be a hell of a lot to figure out if they want to have part of this done in 16 months.  Maybe they mean that they hope to break ground in 2024.

The development, which could debut in 2024, will include “one or two championship golf courses”, according to the developers, equestrian facilities capable of hosting tournaments such as the World Equestrian Games, a luxury hotel and holiday homes.

If they weren’t wildly optimistic, they wouldn’t be developers!

The two sites are quite different.  The first is mostly on the side of a pretty steep and rocky hill, with desert vegetation and some cork trees.  The second is down in the valley, with a couple of washes running through it, a big pocket of sand, and a lot more cork oaks.  I sure hope they get the permit to build the second course, it's very secluded and with no housing planned there, it would be a great place for a private club.  [That would also allow the first course to host more outside play.]
