One of the Strangest Holes I've Played
« on: July 31, 2023, 12:10:24 PM »

The 12th at Meadow Brook GC, a muni in SLC. This "hole" has been baffling me for a day or so now. They indicate which green is in play on the tee box, but both are mostly blind. Thoughts?

I'm guessing the left green was put in later, to protect the houses from bombardment.

Perhaps and homage to #8 at pine valley? I actually think the hole is very interesting because a person who plays a fade can hit the left green from both fairways, but a person who plays a draw ironically will have a better angle on both greens, but less room for error.

Assuming that SLC is Salt Lake City, for us non-Mormons.

Is that a ridge down the middle? If not, why not mow it all as fairway and ditch the scrawny trees?
Coming in 2024

~Soaring Eagles

Correct, Salt Lake City.

It is a ridge. That's part of why it confuses me so much.

A couple questions:

How long is the hole? Judging from the houses, I'm guessing about 300 yards or so?

And speaking of houses, any idea if they were they built after the hole was already there? If it's 300 yards, I can only imagine that the back yards of the 6 or so houses must resemble a war zone with so many trying to drive the green.

Yikes.

About 310 from the tips. It looks like the hole has been like that since the 60s (before the houses were built)

This one is from '65. No homes yet and it looks like the fairway might be more connected at least.

I think it averages about 10 yards

Genuinely bizarre. Interesting and quirky, but extremely confusing.  I could definitely see the excitement of a fairway-height ridge kicking the drive to favor one green over the other, but once you let rough grow over the ridge and add trees, it just seems borderline nonsensical.

Noah,

Great callout.  I played there years ago and had forgotten about that odd hole...as the course is pretty forgettable otherwise.

Be interesting to see what others chime in with, as I also have no clue why that was done.

P.S.  I used to work in that business park just east of the course and this isn't the only hole that plays super close to housing, buildings, and parking lots.  Saw a few cars get plunked! :D

Maybe consider flattening the ridge and connecting the fairways? Seems like a very dangerous hole as is.

Ciao

I would really like to see the greens connected in the back, to allow folks who end up in the wrong fairway a chance at a heroic two putt instead of forcing them to attempt to play over the trees.
